Hi, I’m just looking for some advice.
I’ve purchased some Earpeace Music protection ear plugs to use at the local civic hall at Soul and Motown nights. The ear plugs come with 3 different acoustic filters
26, 20, and 17 SNR . Does anyone have any advice on which filter I would need to use .
Hi it’s hard to say without knowing how loud the venue played the music.
One of my bugbears is that music venue volume is totally unregulated so it could be anything from “fine to chat over” to “ear bleed welding volume”. I’d start with the 26 decibel attenuation filters (the strongest) and work your way down.
A simple thing that would clarify volume levels is download a sound meter app on your phone. NIOSH do a good one link below. Once you have that you can take a reading in the club see how loud it is then aim to reduce the volume as close to 85 db or lower with the choice of ear plug filters.

Thanks for your reply I will try what you suggest. I thought that because the venue is run by the local council it would be at a safe volume .
I wish that were the case but unfortunately only “guidelines” exist for safe volume levels at music venues in the UK - no laws. Ridiculously it’s down to each individual attending any music event to judge if the situation demands ear protection or not - it’s crazy.

That does seem ridiculous when the volume can easily damage your hearing . I did think that it would be up to 85db being the council considering how strict they are on other health and safety situations.
