Blood test today - bled lots afterwards...

Hi, I went fora blood test today which was fine. When nurse was finished and about to put on cotton wool and Micropore strip, she asked if I was on warfarin - I'm not. When I asked why, she said that I was bleeding a lot. I sat there for a while, with pressure on and she put the cotton wool on and off I trotted. I've just undressed (I'd forgotten about the Micropore & cotton wool) and I've obviously been bleeding quite a lot. The cotton wool is saturated and my jumper and cardi are blood stained, as is Micropore and my forearm. It's no longer bleeding. I've been on 20mcg T3 for a month now, alongside my 150mcg T4. Would T3 have this effect? Anyone else had this? Thanks, Kxx

Blood clotting is affected by thyroid. However, I know it is not often mentioned or considered.

I would be vigilant about this. Liothyronine (T3) is said to increase the effect of warfarin.

One blood clotting issue that occurs in hypothyroidism, as an example, is Acquired von Willebrand disease.

That might at least give you some keywords to search for. Not an area I have had much to do with beyond seeing petechiae on someone who was quite badly hypothyroid at the time.

Take care

Rod

Hi Usually you need to press very hard until well clotted. Then put on a fresh pad etc. If necessary raise the arm. Some people bleed a lot better than the other way!

Best wishes,

jackie

Only had it once - after my 125mcg blood test. Never happened before, realised my arm felt wet five minutes later, bled through my clothes and blood all down my arm. The plaster was floating in a sea of red. Didn't happen at the next one though.

Yes, has never happened to me before either despite regular tests over the past 3 years. It's more painful now than previously too. Will keep an eye on it for next time :-) thanks!
