What caused too much B12 to be produced?

My doctor does not know why my body has a very high B12 result and a low iron count showing in my most recent blood test. The thyroid levels are good though but she is worried about some of the rest of the results.

Any idea anyone please?

Can I just add that I do not take any supplements and I do not eat meat either.

Thank you

Are you still feeling unwell? There are various things that it could be. Perhaps your liver isn't functioning as well as it could be. I expect if your doctor suspects this she will test to make sure. Do you know what the other tests were that were worrying her?

Apparently there is also a genetic problem where the enzyme that turns B12 into active B12 isn't working so the B12 isn't used well, thus building up in the blood stream. There are also other reasons but speculation is likely to cause worry. You really need to talk to your doctor and get any other tests done so she can make a diagnosis.

I hope you find out the answers.

Carolyn as you say 'building up in the blood stream', with my very limited knowledge (only from my own research, poor memory, and well aware a little knowledge is a dangerous thing) I merely observe that sometimes blood tests are flawed as they only measure what is actually IN the blood and perhaps not being used where it should? (and blood volume can be low too - giving strange results too)

rcpeacock - A little speculation (but not the worrying sort) Many think TSH is a flawed test as it is actually a measure of pituitary hormone, not Thyroid; then a high T4 can indicate it not being converted to usable T3 for example. Is serum Calcium similar perhaps? (needing Vit D3 to help). So maybe B12 is also similar??? I have noticed (from web site info only) folate can mask this and there is a better B12 test than the usual NHS one. BUT I really don't know - just trying to help as it is unusual for someone who doesn't eat meat. Sorry, but for the life of me I cannot find the actual post for more info....

However I'm very glad you are feeling Ok'ish, and your GP is trying to get to the bottom of this, please keep us informed, with best wishes Jane :D

Ok thanks. She said she would research reasons and get back to me.

I feel OK'ish. Just always tired and my mind does not work well - and I can't sleep well!!! Just all the normal things.

She sounds like she will get to the bottom of it :) Let us know how it goes.

I'd be interested in the answer too as I also have mid range B12 results but desperately low Ferritin/Iron that I can't seem to improve. I am always tired, have lots of aches & pains and forget too much. Let us know how you get on. x

I also had a very high b12 reading 2 years ago, my Dr said as i looked alright the test must be wrong, and ignored it.

Had another test this year, it is in the normal range now although on the high side.

I also don't eat meat.

Just a suggestion - perhaps you would all benefit from having an Active B12 test? The usual B12 test measure inactive B12 too and it is not unusual for it to give confusing results.
