I've recently been tested and I have a tsh value of 5.5 I am feeling tired all the time and sleeping a lot during the day and everything seems an effort. My gp won,t treat me for a thyroid unless it is at least in the 20"s. What do I do ? Is it thyroid?,

Yes it is your thyroid get a new gp who will listen to your symptoms

Can you get a print-out from your surgery of your thyroid gland blood tests complete with the ranges (figures in brackets) as labs differ throughout the country and all have different ranges. It also makes it easier for someone to comment.
If you haven't already had blood tests for Vit B12, Vit D, ferritin, folate and iron - request these as well.
Your TSH is high but GP's have been told to wait till you reach 10 but some will prescribe sooner if they take into account your symptoms.
Hi You also need T4 and Free T3 for a proper diagnosis, but likely the TSH too high, T3 if needed lowers it., lots of us take it in addition to other thyroid meds.
best wishes,

I was diagnosed and treated for hypthyroid when TSH was 5.5, the same reading as you, so I agree with Lila - definitely get another GP. Also did your GP check your antibodies?
best wishes

Lately everyone stresses to get your blood tests taken as early in the morning as possible since tsh may be up to 2 points higher than later in the day.
