I don't know if this helps at all, but before I sorted out adrenals and vitamin D deficiency, I was photosensitive (really horrid reaction to sunlight) and would just suddenly come out in nettle rash or hives for no apparent reason. This doesn't happen since I have got my vitamin D levels up and sorted out my adrenals. I don't know if this is at all related to what you are experiencing but if you haven't investigated vitamin D and cortisol, it might be an idea.

I hope you find out what's causing it so you can get it treated.

I sympathise the past two weeks I have been getting them the top of my back just below my thyroid and on my chest now they have moved down just under my chest. They are like little pin pricks that feel sore when touched.

I keep getting hives on my wrists only (so far!). I've seen 3 GP's at my practice and no one could say what it was let alone why it is there. I have hashimotos thyroiditis.

I get hives all over too, really uncomfortable. Docs say they don't know why and say it's idiopathic (no reason for it). From reading up on the internet it seems that those of us with autoimmune diseases can be prone to this. I take antihistamines daily and have to keep my skin well moisturised.

Hope you get rid of yours soon. x

Came across this and found it amusing....

In his book The Human Body, Isaac Asimov noted a comment about the term idiopathic made in the 20th edition of Stedman's Medical Dictionary: "A high-flown term to conceal ignorance".[3]

In the American television show House, the title character remarks that the word is "from the Latin, meaning: 'We're idiots 'cause we can't figure out what's causing it.'"

I have an ongoing battle with hives, and saw an immunologist for the first time a few weeks ago. He said he sees a lot of patients with automimmune thyroid problems and hives, so I am hoping to get to the bottom of it with his help!

I get it a lot on my neck too, it's like our bodies are trying to tell us our thyroids are causing this. And like VanessaB, it gets work during the evening and through the night. It really does make you feel miserable doesn't it?

Yep get it and the swelling too.

A nurse told me her Consultant said in her case, that hers first showed up and was down to allergic reaction to the fabric conditioner she used by mistake. The second time it appeared al over her neck very obviously in the thyroid area of her throat, and subsequent scans showed her thyroid was lumpy and lymph up due to infection in her blood. Quick up on her meds and a batch of antibiotics and it was sorted. Now she reports anytime it appears when she is run down or ill. Her immunity is shot to pieces, like mine, so she takes it as a warning sign somethings amiss.

Lucky her her Consultant actually listens and sorts it out. Unlike mine who has selective deafness if you open your mouth and say btw whats this or this is happening.

But these hives can be also because its either the toxins/ antibodies/ infection/ allergic reaction setting in the thyroid/neck area thats causing it. Such things are the bodies way of saying Dr I need some careful looking over and a spot of fine retuning.

Some people get hives, some get boils, some get hot spots some get red flushing marks but if it appears in the same area more than twice tell your Dr to investigate what is the cause is. There is a reason the body does not decide today its hives day and to badger Drs who just dismiss it.

I have urticaria/ hives. It's horrible and itchy and unsightly and although my GP prescribes Cetirizine which I take every day, no one is prepared to tackle it properly. You can buy Cetirizine cheaply at the chemist and use a good moisturizer like Boots aqueous cream. Stay away from necklaces for now and keep scarf wear to a minimum.

Not sure if this is relevant but hives can appear due to the liver/gall bladder having an off day.

My partner got hives and the Consultant said it was the liver as he had a gall stones. Drove my poor man mad as he itched all over. He was given Piriton for it. I now get sympathy as i get it on my neck.

Hi VanessaB. Did you ever learn what caused the hives? I've been searching everywhere for what my problem is. Seems like my searches never hit home until I read yours.

I have a reaction that occurs generally twice a year, most noticeably in the winter months, and it starts a little below my clavicles. I live in Florida and the sun doesn't bother me, sweating oant a problem and i havent changed any cleaning products througgout the years. It begins like a weird turtle neck; never wraps around to the back . It will be bright red, hot, a bit puffy, itchy, it burns and it seems to go away when it wants. The outbreak times ars never the same. The longest I remember it lasting was three weeks. When it does start to go , it separates from the middle of my throat and dissipates into little visible dotty hives towards the sides of my neck. It will look almost like a big circle of hives from under my chin to thw sides of my neck down to the middle of my chest. It's not ringworm. It doesnt spread and will not react to fungal creams. Calamine doesn't work. OTC steroid creams do not work.

Benadryl does help with the itch but it doesn't make it go away. I currently combine oral benedryl and Palmers Cocoa butter topically. The Palmers coats thickly and doesn't saturate easily and leaving me itchy soon. I just walk around with a really shiny neck for a while.

My doctor says it baffles her because its not something topical but internal almost. Ive pushed off going to the dermatoligist because this is so random, I never have proof when I need it. So, I plan on making the appointment in two weeks. I hoped you had an idea of what it is, seeing as it seemed like you and I have the same problem.

Hives in the neck chin and chest area can also be caused by an allergic reaction to eggs. I get themwhen I eat eggs sometimes if I eat too much wheat. They take forever to go away.

My hives and general itching have stopped after several years of being very problematic having gone gluten free and switched to Natural Dessicated Thyroid. I wasn't expecting this - I was just hoping to feel more lively (which I do!)

I just recently got hives on my thyroid area of my neck only. I thought it was the fillers in the synthroid-I was taking the 50mg white pills, at first I thought it was the blue dye in the 150mg, but I had switched. So confused as to what is causing this. My Dr. says it is probably Hashimotos disease but does not wish to test me bc she says I still take the same meds.
