I have just started to take Selenium after feeling cr*p for ages and reading on here that it might help in the conversion of T4 into T3. This is in addition to multi-vitamins + iron and zinc tablets which I've been on for a while. Over the past couple of days I've noticed an improvement in my skin; I've had acne-type spots/lumps for years but am reluctant to get too over-excited about anything despite also losing 4lb in weight.... yay!!
I had a complete thyroidectomy 10 years ago. As per usual, GPs have been rubbish both before and after the op. to be honest; I've been referred to many skin specialists over the years who've prescribed useless anti-biotics time and time again.... and I'm currently waiting for an endo. referral after blood tests came back "normal" yet again!!
Has anyone else had any noticeable improvements after taking Selenium?

I noticed an immediate improvement in foot pain as soon as I started taking selenium, and several months on it's still so much better. I did mention to my endo that I now take it. He didn't make any comment re selenium helping to convert T4 to T3 though.
I take selenium ACE (Wassen) and it certainly helps my immune system.. if I EVER get a cold or a strep throat I can ALWAYS ask myself if I've forgotten my selenium for a few days and answer in the affirmative...
also.. BEWARE.. I have twice had issues when I've overdone my selenium.. I was taking Magnesium OK (wassen) which has as much selenium as my selenium Ace alongside my selenium ace so was effectively doubling up and felt drunk.. certainly unfit to drive, got lost in sainsbury's and couldn't remember if I'd driven and if I even had a car.. so don't over do it.. get a reputable brand and check the selenium levels in your accompanying multivitamins.
I've read 1 brazil nut contain enough selenium for our daily needs, I take 2 just to be on the safe side. It stops me from rattling about with all the other vits I take!
Thanks for the replies. My multi-vitamins don't have Selenium in them, so I should be ok..... but as I sometimes park and forget where I've put the car anyway...... I'll have to watch for other things.... lol!
My skin is definitely better over the past week though; it's healing better for the first time in years with no new outbreaks. I've also lost a total of 5lb now since last week and feel so much better. I'm just scared it'll all end and I'll go back to how things have been for so long..... The acid test will be when I go back to work tomorrow; it's a very stressful environment and I'm often burnt out by day 3. Not good...
