I have been under terrible stress at work I have always taken thyroxine for years 150 mg and had hypothyrodism before last year and a month off now I am sure i have hypothyroidism again but this time Ihave severe hair loss will my hair grow back.I am waiting for the results of a blood test for which I had to fast for 12 hours?

If your hair loss is because you are not taking enough thyroxine, it will hopefully grow back once you are on the correct dose.

There are other possible causes of your hair loss. It could be the stress itself, in which case removing yourself from the stressful situation should help.

Another cause could be low ferritin (stored iron). If this is below 70-90 it could be at least part of the problem.

Another possibility is a lack of B vitamins, including B6, B7 (biotin), folic acid and B12. B12 is very important and it is a good idea to take a good amount of this, especially if you suspect a deficiency or are taking folic acid.

You may have adrenal insufficiency that is contributing to this problem. Low cortisol levels are not uncommon following a period of stress and are actually surprisingly common in people with hypothyroidism.

I hope that helps a little. I'm sure someone else will be along with something I may have forgotten.

My hairloss wasn't too bad but it did start growing back once I got my iron and B12 levels up. If you are deficient in iron, vitamin B2 is very important for helping with iron absorption.

I hope your hair starts to grow back soon.

thanks my blood test showed increased glucose as wellas thyroid wrong so having glucose diabetes test tomorrow . Lost almost all my hair in a month but been under terrible stress at work also. Doctor recommended Selsun shampoo in case scalp has fungi infection as very dry ,but all my skin dry as also have lichen planus ,had for years and coeliac disease last 30 years all linked to immune system . Got two weeks off work can't face going to tecah if no hair . Thank you again I showd your reply to doctor so they are also testing Vit B levels
