Hi there trouble is although flouride may not be good for us, digraph at is very good for vulnerable teeth!! For example if a patient suffers with a dry mouth maybe due to meds, then they are more vulnerable then duraphat really keeps the teeth less prone to decay. If you are concerned about flouride, maybe ask your dentist to order you something called tooth mousse it has 0 flouride and is great for teeth, it's not easy to get hold of. It's used for children sometimes mainly calcium based. I haven't got a lot of knowledge on flouride and general health. But I do have a little knowledge when it comes to teeth Sarah

Thanks Sarah, I did get it on prescription. Yes been suffering with a dry mouth and sore gums, I wonder if it is due to my 100mcg levothyroxine. Is that a side affect do you know? I have been using it since August 2012.

I'm not sure about that sorry the one thing I do know is my gum health has changed since thyroid probs and I have to keep them spotless, my plaque builds quicker, and my gums don't cope with any plaque so I try and keep them really clean and it helps.

Keep well hydrated.Sipping water, sugar free gum can help. There is a range called biotene which can help for a dry mouth,.... I think that's what's it's called. Having a dry mouth can make you more prone to decay and plaque build up, saliva is really important as it has neutralising benefits, and it has minerals in which keep your mouth well maintained. I can understand why the dentist px duraphat, if your concerned about the flouride, tooth mousse might be good

I just read this link about changes in iodine?

I'm much the same. I've had to get a high dosage of duraphat on prescription as well due to crumbling tooth enamel. The stuff does work really well for prone teeth. Did your dentist put any restrictions on how often to use it? Mine pretty much told me to use it only once a week because it is that high of a dosage of flouride. I don't know if once a week of a dosage like that would affect thyroid hormone too much.

Never even knew about mousse as an alternative. Would it work well on someone with poor quality tooth enamel?

I have a thyroid problem and my dentist told me once a day. I don't clean my teeth with it I just rub it into my teeth. No one has said anything to me about it being a problem because of taking thyroid medication.

Chrissie273 I was also prescribed Duraphat. Once I realised how bad it is I stopped using it. Fluoride is really bad for your thyroid as it competes with the iodine atoms in thyroid hormones T4, T3 etc.

Neither your doctor nor your dentist will tell you about this as they probably don't know.

Yes I was looking at fluoride being bad for autistic children also as a lot of deficiencies they have are similar to us with thyroid conditions. Infact it's scarily similar! I am hypo and have 2 boys with autism. They are often low in all the same ones as us.

My dentist prescribed me Duraphat but I stopped using it when I realised that my taste was going quite noticeably.

I've literally just picked up my prescription so thought I would research it a bit more. I have a really dry mouth at night but I also take meds for fibro which definitely dry my mouth out. Will have to keep reading up about fluoride and thyroid!

Hello! My dentist told me a lot of things about fluoride in toothpaste and send me that article blog.publicgoods.com/sodium... (there are the most comprehensive description). Also he told me to use a dental floss or water floss (like these bestadvisers.co.uk/oral-irr... ) to avoid future problems
