Why can't I seem to put any weight on . I am Hypo and take 75mcg per day. I have been Hypo for 10 years. Is there a problem with the dosage.

Without your blood results it would be difficult to say if 75mcg levo is enough or not, how do you feel? Have you lost a lot of weight suddenly, are you under your normal weight, or what?

Hi. I have never put weight on with this disease either. I'm still the same weight as I was 20 years ago. Unless you are underweight, or losing weight, or feeling ill, is it a problem? The disease seems to affect us all differently. I am thankful this is one symptom I don't have to worry about!

I hope it isn't because I was like you when I was diagnosed 11 years ago, had lots of other symptoms but only put on 4lbs which came off as soon as I was medicated. However, meantime I have had a second round of problems with my medication and put on a stone, totally unheard of in my skinny world. A change of medication and its going.

We are probably in the minority with the weight issue but as long as you retain your normal body weight and you feel well on yjour 75mcg of levo - I think you should just celebrate.

I was skinny all my life. So it is ok. Now after my surgery they gave me Ensure nourishment drinks. Maybe you should ask the doctor to give u supplement drinks. These help put the weight on. Especially Ensure 2cal.

Wow! You lucky lot! I am surviving on lettuce and chicken (small portions). Still 10 pounds over weight!

Yeah, maybe not so lucky though. I've been at both ends and being really skinny wasn't nice either, especially when you just can't put on weight. You can feel physically rubbish when underweight. I'm currently 4 stone overweight though. Not sure which is worse - not being able to gain weight or not being able to lose it! Both situations are horribly frustrating!

I don't like being this thin , I was just worried that the medication isn't right for me when I hear so many people are putting on weight.

I'm sure you don't :( I remember it wasn't nice. I could eat so much and not gain weight no matter how hard I tried and I hated being so thin. Of course, I don't like being 4 stone overweight either but hopefully that is starting to change now :D

Perhaps levothyroxine suits you and maybe you are on slightly too much or perhaps that is just what your metabolism is like when it is 'normal'. Do you have recent blood test results? That might help to shed some light on why you can't gain weight. If you don't have them, you are entitled to them so do ask. If you have any trouble with this please let us know and we can provide you with some information if necessary :)

Many of us who have too much weight as a result of thyroxine just don't feel well at all on any dose of it. Some are kept on too low a dose. Perhaps you don't have a problem with thyroxine but you may be on a slightly too high dose. Blood test results will help.

Do bear in mind that it could also be something else if your bloods are fine. If you are still concerned after sorting out the thyroxine please do talk to your doctor to make sure there is nothing else out of balance.

I hope you find the solution soon.

Everything is relevant I suppose, my brother has always called me twiggy but I am 5'5" and my normal weight is around 9st 2/4lbs with a BMI of 23 so I don't think I would be considered underweight medically. Within small margins I have maintained this weight all my adult life with no input from me - until Hashi's joined my life. Even the menopause didn't manage to dump any extra pounds onto my hips.

I have never ever known what it's like to be thin without trying. I was only very thin when I had eating disorders....and that was sad..

And that is probably one of the most difficult things to recover from :( I hope you are recovered now, or as well as you can be.

I don't want to waste your Time but I wanted to thank you for the reply because it IS sad and then to get hashimoto's guaranteed to fatten you up (usually) was like a slap in the face. I have been trying to accept the weight gain as best as poss but some habits die hard, like I still weigh myself 10'times a day... I never allow any doc to weigh me .....it sounds crazy....thanks again

Hi Mikiviki, I hope my weight issues didn't sound like a gloat, it wasn't meant to be. My very best friend is the same as you and there doesn't seem to be any justice especially when you try so hard. It must be just down to the physiology of each individual - I certainly haven't done anything to deserve it. Good luck and hope your hashi's is behaving.

Not at all! My 2 daughter in laws and respective mothers are all exceptionally slim despite age ( menopause etc. ) if I hadn't had this illness no doubt I would still have been battling with the weight. To be honest I would rather stay at present weight if only I could feel well every day. That would be something!!

Like some of you I was whippet-like until 40 years of age; even though I now know that I was starting to get very hypo.. (5'10" and 9st.) I ate vast quantities and worked on our farm. Then the weight just piled on and I have only recently lost 24lbs to get back to a reasonable weight. (At over 55 I have to make a choice between my face and my figure - the face won out!)

If you are feeling fine at whatever weight then that may be your natural state. What is a problem is when weight dominates ones life, be it too much or too little weight.

Diversity is the thing...we are all different.

Hi Penny thanks for your comments Good to know others have also been thin with Hypo. Iam not going to worry about my weight unless anything drastic happens .

I agree we can all get too obsessed with the weight issue of this disease.

As long as we feel okay, that's the important thing.
