Hi have been talking to my dentist about having an X-ray and have asked for Thyroid Guard. She tells me they don’t use them but if I can get information on if they are obliged to use these she will get one. Anyone know the official guidelines on this.

Title : The Use of Thyroid Shields in Dental Radiography
The acronym ALARA in the website name stands for "As Low As Reasonably Achievable" and the whole website is on the subject of radiation in various circumstances.

It has been my understanding that currently dental x rays are unlikely to target the thyroid and that they are far safer than years ago. Perhaps if you are to be having X-rays repeated at monthly intervals for a period of time then protection should be provided. Radiation treatment killed my thyroid in the 1950s however that was high doses over a period of about three years all told. No guards in those days, nor control over dose, many with the same treatment went on to develop thyroid cancer in their forties. Clearly a lesson was learnt. Good luck,
