Vitamin D

I have now got my vitamin D results back and they show they are low, can anyone recommend where I can get vitamin D from, my calcium levels were ok, so its just my vitamin D. The only ones in I can see in the shops contain 500iu, but others on here have mentioned taking 5,000iu per day. Any suggestions?

Thank you RedApple, I will get from here, how long does it take to get levels back to normal and feel better?

have you got your level - was it thro' the GP? J :D

That's going to be a very individual thing, at least partly dependent on how low your level is before you start. :)

Hi You need a calcium test before taking vit D, calcium must always be in range,I see you have done this which is good as D causes calcium to rise. for this reason D is increased slowly on 3 monthly blood tests until stable. Best under an endo ,if seeing one, or GP second best because of the blood tests.A hormone so quite complicated.

Hi Jackie

I am not under an endo, just being treated by my GP!!

If your vitamin D ;evels are low your GP wil prescribe supplements for you - talk to your GP.

Not always the case. Can depend on what their 'budget' allows. My GP won't prescribe. Might discuss dosing but then tells patients to buy their own supplements. I suspect that part of the problem might be that if they prescribe the supplements, they are then committing to doing further follow-up testing, which increases their testing costs.

HI RedApple

I think you might be right, but I will have to go back and get my levels checked again, so hopefully they will do it!!

Hi Kavidacat

My GP hasnt prescribed anything, she asked me to speak to the chemist, she also reckoned that it was because I am asian rather than anything to do with my hypothroidism!!

In my experience not all GP's are aware of the latest research findings re the vital role Vitamin D plays in all systems of the body, nor of the dosages recommended by the Vitamin D Council. You may be given, at most, 800iu's and this will probably be in a tablet combined with calcium. I'd research it and treat myself if I were you. If you'd like to watch a slideshow about the subject that I have compiled then please private message me and I'll email it to you. I use it when I give talks on the subject.

Kind Regards

Barbara

Hi Barabaraj

Thanks, no my GP didnt understand and said i should speak to the chemist, but the most they had was 500iu, and my GP also said that as my calcium level was fine that I didnt need it combined with calcium. She also thought I was depressed, and maybe I am, but only because of my conditions and the symptoms I have because of it!!

Barbara. My vitamin d level was 32, the range should be over 50 minimum. The doctor prescribed 3200 daily, after 3 months, 800 daily. However, because of doctor delay, I ordered D3 with Vitamin K, .5000ius daily from Amazon, which I had been taking, I saw an endocrinologist, who suggested I take only 1600ius daily. Who is right? I am so confused, that I decided to go along with the 1600ius daily, but the Vitamin D Council recommend a lot more. I am in my seventies and overweight, which weight issue I have read should mean upping the daily dosage. Thanking you in anticipation of some help,

Hi, I use a sublingual spray from a company called 'better you'. My result was 24 and after a month of using this it had shot up to 168! You can buy it in different strengths, I used 5000iu a day to get my level up and now take 1-2000iu a day as a maintenance dose. I also use their sub lingual b12.

I use the Solgar soft gel capsules as I understand that Vit D is better absobed if it is oil based. You can also get these in different strengths, either from the Solgar website or loads of other companies if you google.

Hi Smatassbraud,

I get mine from foryourhealth.co.uk, but I order them over the phone, as no security symbol displayed, when I tried to order them over the net. They arrived within the week. I ordered 5000iu of vitamin D3, they also do smaller strengths.
