Hello, I've had a plan for this year which I accept I may not follow, but I am setting out a plan so that I remain positive. I have felt unwell since october, and since have had my levo increased, my plan is get to optimum with levo, check in on how I feel then try ndt if I don't feel fully recovered, i'm trying to improve on my diet and am really seriously considering ldn, but one thing at a time is my method at the moment. I've got a scan on my thyroid on the 21st, have got vitd and b12 deficiency, and a mild low iron. the gp is giving me 5 b12 jabs over the next 2 weeks, the gp has perscribed 1000iu vit d but doesn't feel i need iron supplementation, I think I do. my nutritionist says you have to be carful with iron but she will check my results and advice me. (she has hashimotos) so I am moving forward!!!!!
my tsh is 2.2 which is the bests its been, the question is should I go up from 75mcg to 100mcgs and see if my tsh will improve more, and if i do should i wait until after my b12...I'm worried that the b12 will suddenly make the levo more affective, or do you think it would be ok to up the dose now, or should I just try ndt if i've no benefits from the levo?? I know i've got to make my own decision but I would appreciate your views and experiences. sorry about the spelling and punctuation....tired lady
It is very tempting to try to speed things up when you feel so rotten, which is only natural. The problem with doing everything together is that if you have a reaction to anything that might not suit you, it will be very difficult to know what is causing it.
Although it does seem from your TSH a higher dose would be preferable, I believe you are correct that correcting B12 could improve your thyroid levels. The same could be said for vitamin D. Vitamin B12 injections can show a quick improvement in symptoms but vitamin D often takes a little longer. I really think with both these two added because you have been identified as deficient, this is enough change for now.
Once your B12 and vitamin D levels are optimal, if you still have other symptoms and poor levels for thyroid, then take a look at the next step of increasing thyroxine. Many many people are o.k. on thyroxine and it may be too early to assume it will not work for you.
It is really good to have a plan but each step needs to be handled systematically.
Thank you. You have hit the nail on the head. It's nice to have somewhere to bounce off your thoughts. It feel a comfort to know I'm doing the right things, and having a gentle reminder to pace my plans. Hope you are alright. Sarah x
Hope your sister is still improving and grandaughter is well to. You inspire me when I read your blogs, the intelligence love and fight you have for your family xx
75 mcg is a pathetic amount, especially with auto immune thyroid problems and your doctor should be ashamed.
I would point him or her in the direction of the pulse article (you can get it from admin on here) and I would buy a copy of the Antony Toft booklet understanding thyroid problems and make your doctor read the bit that says you should be treated until tsh is below 1 and free t4 is at the top of or just over range......
No wonder you are unable to absorb vitamin B12, all of your body will be sluggish with a raised TSH....
A normal replacement dose of T4 is 125 - 150 mcg but many people need more, if the B12 miraculously makes you hyper, you can always drop back down on the dose......
Thanks g, you think 75 is bad? I've been on 25mcgs for 10 months, after a years visiting the gp. Kept getting told I had post natal depression!! I. Thought I was going crazy. I haven't felt well for 2 years xx
Personally I would try 100 mcg for a few weeks until you run out of meds and then ask for a new prescription.... A doctor cannot leave you with no meds. If you have run out.... But this incompetent fool might try......
Maybe it wasn't intended but I had a giggle reading your last message. I think they thought I was one of those anxious patients and that was that. 7gps later and I have found that is far from perfect but she is a huge improvement. She believes me which is start. Once I am a bit better I am going to have a meeting with the manager to discuss my experience determined to put that across. I've been referred to an endocrinologist who seems more interested in diabetes but awaiting scan on the 21st on my thyroid. Thanks g I need to be a bit braver sometimes
You certainly do need to be brave.... if it was your son who was ill, you would have no hesitation in fighting his corner, but for yourself, it's easy to get put off.... However, your little boy needs you to be fighting fit.....
If I can raise a smile, it is always intended
So far I have chickened out of demanding better treatment from the doctor and fund my own NT....... However, I do get the correct tests, because I roll down my sleeve and walk out if they try to take blood for the wrong tests... I also make sure I am always given my test results.....
My most useful tip is to smile sweetly, and apologise for being awkward - works for me, they fall over themselves in an attempt to prove I am not awkward
