Short Synacthen test tomorrow, should I bother and does it make you feel unwell?

I have looked on previous questions about this test and it sounds worthless having it done, unless checking for addisons, I'm really nevous about having a reaction to the test aswell, silly I know. Is this test worth having down, what was your own experience

Many thanks

Sarah

Made me feel great about 2 hours after Id left, didnt last long, and like you say its more or less a waste of time unless you have addisons, but it rules it out which is worth it I suppose.

Not much value in it for me - didn't help me convince the "endo" followed this up with a private 24hr Genova diagnostics saliva test which confirmed low lunchtime cortisol levels. Didn't make me feel unwell - have j

Heard of it actually making people temporarily feel much better !

Good luck !

I too had it done and felt a little better afterwards but nothing major. It didn't show addisons but a saliva test revealed that my adrenals were almost kaput! I saw Doc P started taking adrenal supplements and bingo started to feel much better. Can't tolerate T4 so now looking into possibility that low vita and minerals might be causing me to feel unwell. No harm in having it done, it ticks another box and you will then know what to do next. Good luck.

What adrenal support do you take? Thanks so much xxx

It only shows the level at a particular time of day. As I understand it, is it done in the morning when levels tend to be highest, so it would show if you had Addison's disease. In my case I used the 24 hour saliva test from Genova. This showed that although it was normal in the morning it went below range in the afternoon, accounting for the afternoon slump, and shot up in the evening, making it difficult for me to sleep. The natural rhythm was completely disrupted and with treatment with both adrenal and thyroid glandulars on the advice of Dr P, a second test has revealed an overall rise in production and a normal circadian pattern, even if the afternoon is still a little low. The Genova test also revealed that DHEA was low, so I take some of that.

Sorry I keep referring to 'it'. I mean cortisol.

It made me burst into tears and I couldn't stop crying for hours! I've never heard of anyone else reacting like that though. Nurse was really worried, so I don't think she had either. If you don't have it, they won't send you for any others. I got an insulin stress test, an ECG and a brain scan as a result.

It made me cry too which is odd! Dunno whether i was stressed cause theyd been trying to get blood out of me for 15 mins beforehand as they always struggle to do so, but im used to that and never react so put it down to the injection.

How did it go?

in reply to helvella

Hello Rod, Thanks for asking. I didn't go :/ can't explain very well what I mean but I'll try. I feel like I can't cope with stress, I suppose it figures with adrenal problems, i'm worrying about having a reaction and i just can't get myself to go. When I tried nutri adrenal oh I felt awful, last year before being diagnosed with a problem I had constant very severe anxiety, it just seems like any stress I want to avoid. My gut is telling me not to have it as I have done the genova and it shows what I need to know (low cortisol) the gp and consultant said its very unlikely i have addisons due to other tests the have done. I feel like if I have this test it is just to keep the consultant quiet and i begrudge doing it for that reason. I'm not sure how to explain myself to the consultant yet

Don't feel you need to explain. I was asking out of interest - not meaning to demand a reply!

You have explained pretty well - maybe that is exactly what you need to take with you to the consultant?

Thanks thats a really great idea!!! x

It made me feel a little better on the day, sort of head in the clouds, a bit euphoric but zapped me out of energy for the next week from the day afterwards, took me some time to recover.

If you think there's any chance of having Addison's then worth getting it done. I doubted that for myself, but figured it was better to be sure to be able to rule it out and also because I didn't want to get accused of not cooperating with the endo.

It didnt make me feedl anything. The nurse seemed exceeding surprised - I think they expect a reaction of some sort.

Well I'm going for the test tomorrow I've been back to the endo and he's made it clear that I must go :/
