Hashi's & Probiotics?

Hi Folks. A quick question πŸ€”

What are people's thoughts on the use of probiotics with auto immune related hypothyroidism?

I have just started taking a Bifodobacterium complex in the hope of eleviating lower gastric issues (bloating, gassy pain). I am on a gluten free, soya free diet and I don't have issues with dairy ( determined through testing and a trial with the FODMAP diet).

Considering these particular probiotics are supposedto help with gut issues, I am still experiencing painful gas and bloating. I'm just wondering if probiotics are advisable with Hashi's?

I had good results using water kefir when I experienced gastric issues (following a course of antibiotics). I bought some organic water kefir grains from Amazon and followed instructions on an online video to make it. If you are planning to take probiotics medium- long term, this is certainly cost effective.

Thanks, unfortunately I can't eat yoghurt and Kefir. Diike them both immensely. I'm going with the pop in yer mouth pill version πŸ˜†

Water kefir is not at all like milk kefir. Mine is so nice that I have my mate's grandchildren asking for it all the time. As it comes, it has a sort of neutral taste, ie not nasty, not delicious. I add apple juice into the second stage, and that does taste delicious.

Thanks Hypopotamus, I think I'll stick to popping a pill πŸ’Š πŸ˜…

I take probiotics daily and have done for several months now. I did find that they took a good few weeks to become effective and reduce my bloating and discomfort.

Thanks Jingley. I need to stick with them then πŸ˜€.

I'm not convinced this is to do with hashimotos but more a gut issue. I've had a gut issue all my life. How I manage it is keeping a food diary and excluding foods gradually. I'm actually fine with dairy so I can have kefir. What aggravates me mostly is nuts, grains, fruits, potatoes, pickles, kombucha, kimchi and fried foods. I've trained my gut to be able to eat some of those things with small increments. First process is to exclude, gain balance then when feeling settled add like a teaspoon and monitor the experience.

What can help are pancreatic enzymes, lactase, or specific enzymes for beans, but its more important to discover the culprits first.

Thanks, it seems to be related to acidic foods and cards mostly, but I get it with just a plate of plain lettuce too. Just lately it seems to when I eat anything. I do have a hernia I developed when I was pregnant with twins, so that could be causing issues, although the painful wind starts high up in my oesophagus around my throat and travels down to my abdomen. The only relief I get is drinking boiling water and using a hot water bottle. It is definitely not heart burn or indigestion, just painful wind.

hi,

i had issues with probiotics, especially pills and usually ended up constipated. What did help was a liquid probiotic symprove, it reduced bloating straight away.

Ooo, thanks, are they very expensive, and can you recommend a liquid?

Apologies, a blonde moment there, Symprove is obviously the make πŸ˜†.

Yes, they are a bit pricey, but you can find them on offer every now and then, i have them like once every couple of months as i found that they can be quite effective for awhile after i stopped taking them. The bottle usually lasts 7 days.

Hi.

Have Hashi’s and have taken various types for a long time, as and when needed. Some seem more effective than others. Have just started taking Saccharomyces Boulardii which seem to be the most effective yet and are working quickly. Taken at bedtime and certainly is reducing bloating and helping with bowel movements.

Thanks, I think I have that in my complex, but with twenty other things too! πŸ˜†

I had severe bloating, stomach pain & gastric issues and tried everything including food testing, probiotics, food elimination etc. Turned out it was the fillers in the Levothyroxine. Within 48 hours of changing to Vencamil I was back to my normal sense. Amazing. Turns out I cannot tolerate Mannitol or Acacia Powder. I am now also taking Symprove (liquid probiotic) to rebalance my gut.

Yes, it could be all the nasty fillers in my Thyroid S, but this is the only medication I can take.

Having had to take a strong antibiotic recently, I'm taking wonderful goat's milk kefir from a well known Welsh business every day. I love the stuff. Sharp and fizzy and containing 27 strains of bacteria. My gut feels great. It's sorted out cravings and hunger too.

You say you don't like kefir but it's amazing stuff. It's not a drink. It's a health food. Sometimes you just have to hold your nose and swallow for the best effect. But I'd happily drink it anytime of day. I can't bear goat's cheese. But this isn't at all goaty.

I agree w/SteveT3 although when the mfgr of my NDT was changed, I had a horrid increase in digestive issues - 2yrs later when I went back to another mgr., all of those issues disappeared. That being said, I, too, have had digestive issues most of my adult life. I was a kombucha drinker for yrs.; then it stopped its magic. I discovered a great pre/probiotic drink a year or so ago. Whenever the gut starts whining, I drink some. It keeps me in a happy zone for may days. For me, I think it is the prebiotic -- that which the probiotics thrive on,.
