Any clues any one ?

I have been on Erfa thyroid for years . I usually have blood test to show TSH Free T3 and FreeT4

I have recently moved house and therefore doctor. I have just had my 2nd annual blood test with my new drs .(The first one was normal and T3 was done) now myT4 is 37.4 reference range is 11.5 -22.7 they did not do the free T3 even though it was listed in my notes to do it ! I do not have any symptoms of hyperthyroidism . I prepared for my blood test in the usual way stopping meds etc and the results are usually very stable .

I think I should have T3 blood test to get a clear picture , but meanwhile has any body got ant thoughts as to why this should be.

Thank you all very much in anticipation

Do you have Hashi's?

Yes I believe so. Unable to convert T4 to T3 hence Erfa

OK, but have you had your antibodies tested?

If you do have Hashi's then that high FT4 could be due to a Hashi's 'hyper' swing. It rather looks like it.

The lab that tests the blood has the right to refuse to do it, even if the doctor has requested it. Crazy state of affairs, but that's the NHS for you!

Thank you so much for that

I have not had an antibody test in memory have had under active thyroid since around 1997. What to do next ?? I do not have any physical symptoms of hyper activity

There's not much you can do apart from waiting to see if the level goes down by itself.

could be lab error

Get retested TSH, Ft4 and Ft3

Ideally test vitamin levels too

Vitamin D, folate , ferritin and B12

hi, I have experience of this. If the person drawing your blood marks on it that you take T3 and FT3 required to check medication. They generally do it. Good Luck.

Many thanks it is so frustrating I did remind them about the t3. In fact it is weird because apparently according to the new doctor last year when I had my first test with them the only way they can get t3 tested is to have a liver function test. They did the rather pointless liver function test and not the t3 !! . I have been around the block with my thyroid and have had 20years of success with my previous practice so I feel like here we go again !! And the joke is I have never seen the doctor and they do not have any appointments only a phone one in 2 weeks time. I have to persuade them that i am not hyper and I need a new blood test and to continue my meds The moral of this tale is do not move house and change GP!

When you say T3, do you mean free T3 (FT3)?

Hi , Yes sorry,I did mean FT3

My understanding is that the NICE guidelines for managing hypothyroidism and blood testing work on on a cascade basis and say if fT4 is out of range, fT3 should have been done, so I believe you can challenge this and request that the blood test is redone. You need TSH, fT4 and fT3 done from the same blood draw.
