Anyone had Shingrix vaccine for shingles prevention?

I’ve had a look online and I can’t find any reason as to why anyone with hashis shouldn’t have it?

I’ve had shingles three times over the years and I now read this can happen more so in women with autoimmune conditions! Practice Nurse tells me that my having had recurrences, is all the more reason to get the jab - shingles doesn’t give immunity, even after three goes of it.

Anyone had the jab, any comments please?

nhs.uk/vaccinations/shingle...

It's recommended for all adults turning 65, those aged 70 to 79 and those aged 50 and over with a severely weakened immune system.

actually my vaccination was Varicella-zoster which is apparently live virus

Why would they give you, clearly an immunocompromised person, a live vaccine that has known risks and around 55% of efficacy? Shingrix looks better.

No idea…..Getting rid of old stock by the look of things

Shingrix seems more effective longterm

I might ask GP next time I see him

I think my other half got the same as you as he only had one dose. You won’t need two as it’s only the Shingrix that needs two. If they have told you you need another one then they may have their wires crossed about which one they have given you.

I was told I definitely needed two parts

Yes I think I need to check that my medical record is correct on which vaccination I got

There is a separate vaccine for patients who are on immunosuppressents which is not a live vaccine. I am due mine this week. I always remind the practice that I can't have a live vaccine.

They have almost phased the live one out now.

I've had both jabs, six months apart. Apart from a sore arm, I've had no problems. Mine wasn't the live vaccine.

I had mine a few years ago, and all was fine, but I didn't know there was a specific one for immunosuppressed people-nothing was said at all....

Yes, I had this vaccine in 2016; got the ghastly Shingles 9 months later, it lasted 6 weeks! In 2022 I managed to get it again, which also lasted 6 weeks. I agree with you, whereby if you have an autoimmune issues, then you are liable to pick up any viruses. For me, Shingles seemed to come about through being stressed with moving house and and in 2022 I had several health issues. Non of my family, including grandkids, had chickenpox to pass on, so I put it down to being under nourished at the time.

Was it definitely Shingrix, Its allegedly more than 90% effective

My other half had the first Shingrix vaccine last March. He had no side effects whatsoever but I developed shingles about 3 weeks later.

Now I know it's not supposed to be possible to pass it on with this vaccine but I feel it's too much of a coincidence.

He didn't go back for his second jab. - His choice not mine.

Have had both Shingrix this last year, no problems despite having loads of other chronic illnesses including autoimmune stuff.

I had mine in January ( I should have had it years ago as I have RA Asthma Hypothyroidism etc but GP’s argued differently so I gave up. Anyway had Shingrix in Jan & part two in April because of being immunosuppressed. I was wiped out for a few days after & a sore arm otherwise ok.

Yes, I got both Shingrix shots a couple of years ago with no issues. I didn’t want to risk shingles! FYI…I have two autoimmune disorders in addition to being HypoT.

If It helps. I have had the vaccine and I have Hashi’s. No side effects that I am aware of. Shingles was very painful, definitely don’t want another attack.

that happened to my mother in law-got it twice a year so of course doctor suggested the vaccine. WRONG. Now she gets shingles 15 times a year and the creams/pills don’t help much either since the vax.

IMO- no doctor should be giving any vaccine without checking genetic markers to assure problems like this won’t happen. Still boggles my mind that isn’t part of standard testing/care. Could save so many people from awful responses to biologics they should not get, while assuring proper immunity for those who should.

Everyone’s body is different- this is a question for your genetic predisposal, not fellow friends on the internet…and I mean with with the utmost love and care. 🙏 May the decision you make be what is best for your body.

That’s terrible! There’s no way any genetic testing will be done though, so my asking (unscientifically), for anecdotes amongst the Hashi community is the best I can achieve. All other vaccines from childhood onwards have been fine, except for perhaps the flu jab, which I now don’t go for.

Shingrix is a ‘dead’ vaccine, so I’m hopeful. Thank you for your kind wishes and I do feel terribly for your mother in law and family.

I have Hashimoto's and have had the shingles vaccine. Shingles is one thing I do not want to get as I get older. The newer vaccine they have out that is given in two shots is much more effective than the old one they had. The only side effect I had was just a sore arm for a couple of days.
