i have lost lot of hair despite taking Biotin.
I am on 50 mcg of synthroid. Endo doesn’t think hair loss is due to thyroid..
Anyone else have hair loss issues?

Suzi, you might like to show this paper to your endo, which definitely acknowledges that there's a connection between thyroid and hair loss.
'Introduction: Alopecia areata (AA) is associated with thyroid dysfunction and abnormal levels of thyroglobulin and thyroid peroxidase autoantibodies.'

The paper abstract was posted and discussed a bit just a few days ago on the forum here healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...
I think quite alot of us have hair thinning issues. I do - but I don’t know the solution. Ideas anyone?
My thyroid problem was actually diagnosed because of my hair loss. I was told that once my meds and vitamin levels were optimised, it would grow back. That was 30 years ago and its only got worse. I have Hashi's with raised thyroglobulin antibodies. My peroxidase antibodies are within range.
is almost certainly due to your thyroid.
Having said that, there are other possibilities, ( rare and unlikely) for example heavy metals. If you were working in an industry where you were exposed to massive amounts of heavy metals, that could lead to hairloss. It is very rare, even if you were working in such an enviromnent
Also very high levels of testosterone are what causes hairloss in males, no wonder they call their baled patch "the solar panel for their sex machine."
But joking aside, this only takes us back to the thyroid, as everyone first of all makes testosterone out of cholesterol. Yes women too, then that gets broken down and reassenbles into all the other hormones which takes us back to your thyroid unable to do it's part of that job.
Push to see an endo, then make sure you get access to all your medical files so you can see what is going on.
My oh my, look at me 24 hours on T3 and alread I go from timid exhausted to energised and pushy
I wish you all the best
Menoxidil topical has helped in the past, only drawback is that it is inly effective as long as u use it, if u stop using, u loose whatever hair u gained! I noticed recently minixidil is available in pill form at Amazon. I will ask my GP if its ok to take these pills.
I wish my endo would give me a small dose of T3. In the past, endo is very reluctant to prescribe!
if this is any help:
Just because it helped my hair is no reason it might help you, but plantur something or other is supposed to help women's hair in the menopause. I have always had to watch my money so no reason to pay 3x the price of the same shampoo for men, so I have been using alpecin caffeine shampoo, which is the same thing for men. I tried a bottle to see what it was like and just kept replacing the bottle with more of the same because it worked so well. Oooops, are we allowed to recommend a product here? If admin take out the name, please DM me and I tell you again
Other brands are available and I do not own shares in the company....what a world we live in
I have alopecia areata (AA) that predates my hypothyroidism. The extent of patches has fluctuated massively over the past 20years - from near total loss, to just the odd coin sized patch. The recurrence of more extensive AA triggered me attending my GP and the discovery of hypothyroidism.
I have autoimmune hypothyroidism, and my AA is also autoimmune - so I view it as autoimmune conditions hanging out together. Good thyroid treatment, along with optimal minerals and vitamins is likely to be helpful, but I would also suggested a referral to dermatology. I have previously had excellent regrowth with treatment, (which lasted over a decade) and I’m currently on the dermatology waitlist.
Dermatologist suggested injections in the scalp, i didn’t go for it, my scalp is very sensitive!
I’ve never fancied the steroid injections either. There are other treatments - I had success with Diphenylcyclopropenone (DPCP) - though I understand there are currently supply issue. There are also jak inhibitors depending on the severity of condition. However with the results you have posted, increasing your ferritin levels would be a priority, as it a key component of hair growth.
What are your latest blood test results? Is your endo trying to keep your TSH above the bottom of the reference range? You could be under replaced.
it would be good to know your FT3 and FT4 as unless you are very petite 50mcg is unlikely to be enough for anyone.
For example, I’m 65kg quite slim (UK dress size 10) and take 5 days 100mcg and 2 days 75mcg plus T3 10mcg a day.
Taking thyroid hormone doesn’t ’top up’ levels it replaces it so you may be in less than you think.
The other thing to look at that helped with my hair is ferritin, how are your iron levels? Are you veggie? Vegan?
