Years ago during an operation to remove a cyst I was diagnosed with clinical signs of Hashimotos & later confirmed ongoing symptoms were also Hashimotos. (Despite blood results always showing as normal) Last year I was suddenly rushed to hospital with heart palpatations & blood pressure 170. (21 days prior my blood results were normal and the only change to my life was to start taking jelly multivitamins and the day before Id started taking vitamin K so I suspect this could have been the cause) I was kept in hospital for a week & diagnosed with AFIB & Graves disease. I asked the specialised why I was diagnosed as having Graves when despite thd blood tests all of my symptoms still remained those of Hashimotos the opposite of Graves and she agreed that with my symptoms and her general observation of me she didn't feel like I had Graves disease but she had to go with what the blood results said which was Graves. Over the next 7 months I was given decreasing doses of Carbimazole. When my blood results returned to normal the specialist suggested I continue taking the medication for another 12 to 18 months. I pointed out that if I did that we would never know if it had been Graves disease or the Hashimotos going supanova due to the excess of vitamins. Where as -if by not taking the tablets my thyroid range increased again we could be sure of it being Graves disease. So for the last 12 months I haven't taken the thyroid medicine and my thyroid readings have been normal. My symptoms still remain those of Hashimotos. Id be interested to know has anyone else with Hashimotos experienced issues taking multiple vitamins prior to the flip over to Graves and did you still retain the Hashimoto symptoms or did you go full blown Graves with symptoms?

Hashimotos to Graves - Vitamin Suppliment Connection?

Multivitamins never recommended with Graves or Hashimoto’s
Test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 at least annually
And only supplement what’s necessary
Hashimoto’s often has flare where excess thyroid hormone is released as thyroid breaks down under autoimmune attack
To definitely confirm Graves’ disease you should have had TSI or Trab antibodies tested
Check your blood test results and see exactly what has been tested
Graves Disease antibodies test - has to be done by private blood draw

Hashimoto’s- -autoimmune thyroid disease, usually diagnosed by high TPO and/or high TG thyroid antibodies ……can be mildly raised with Graves’ disease too
Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins

Tips on how to do DIY finger prick test

Recommended that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test
This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

It is essential that correct antibody tests are completed, so do ask for copies of your records to establish what has been tested.
I was initially diagnosed as Graves (and had ‘hyper like’ symptoms of palpitations, tremor, fast pulse, weight loss, plus a diagnosis of TED, more commonly associated with Graves). However, after following advice from SlowDragon and other members here, I insisted on full antibody tests and found that I actually have Hashimotos. Endo still adamant that I originally had Graves, but this can’t be ‘proven’!
Graves Disease (hyperthyroidism) needs to be confirmed via positive TRab or TSI:
TRab
TSH receptor antibodies
TSI
Thyroid-Stimulating Immunoglobulin
TPO & TG antibodies may be Graves or Hashimotos.
TPOab
Thyroid Peroxidase antibodies
TGab
Thyroglobulin antibodies
