Has anyone had RAI ablation INSTEAD of completion thyroidectomy for papillary thyroid cancer?

Just that really. Note I'm not talking about RAI after the thyroid is removed but RAI to zap the remaining thyroid after partial thyroidectomy instead of surgery.

Ive got completion booked for tomorrow (after it was cancelled on day off surgery months ago) but out of blue yesterday my surgeon called to offer this iron. She said she'd not come across it before but as I'm so concerned about my voice (slight damage after partial thyroidectomy), they decided to offer it to me.

I have so many questions as had been told the op. followed by low dose RAI was the only option.

I opted to stick with the completion thyroidectomy but would like to hear other thoughts.

I'm ny situation would you have the operation? (it's best option from cancer perspective but has more risk of choice damage).

I may be affected by my friend who lost her voice after thyrodectomy and doesn't have it back 3 months later. Perhaps this makes me extra nervous.

I am a professional choice user.

Thanks for your help.

I had my thyroid removed due to a lump on my trachea and the same cancer. They never remove half here in France only whole in one go.

I had the choice of surgeon and picked a professor with the most experience. This is the most important thing i.e. lots of surgical experience. . I was fine after about 10 days no problems at all. Nothing should be damaged at all and all your healthy parathyroids kept too.

Hello Nicewarmslippers :

You might like to read the most recent research we have for RAI thyroid ablation for Graves Disease - which I had back in 2005 and wouldn't recommend to anybody though it is still a first line treatment option in mainstream medical:

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/306...

Personally I'd go with surgery rather than drink and take down a toxic substance -

as surgery it is cleaner and much more precise though obviously comes with its risks.

Please do your own research :
