An interesting read, DippyDame, thanks for sharing.

I can’t decide whether things will improve or get worse once AI gets involved. If they train the algorithm the way they train doctors we’re all doomed.

On the other hand, if AI actually learns from feedback (assuming someone thinks to programme it that way) maybe it will finally become clear that strict adherence to laboratory reference ranges is a load of old cobblers.

PS, no idea if you can actually train an algorithm. 😂

Well AI is certainly learning and improving. The earlier version of ChatGPT was not very good and you could easily box it in the corner and prove it wrong (I really enjoyed that!!😀). The newer version is actually quite good, as it incorporates much more information, so the learning capability has certainly improved. Still can't do logical problems though - but probably much better at deducting important clues than some GPs! 😂

Well, he sums it up perfectly doesn’t he.

- First of all thyroid patients ‘don’t conform’ ’ with the beliefs of a lot of doctors.

- then ‘most people fit somewhere within it.’ (The range) when I think of how often I’ve said the range is so wide patients are bound to fit ‘within the range’ I imagine you would need to be dead or almost dead not to fit in.

And - ‘So, thyroid patients have to be in the right spot in the reference range for them.

All that in the first few paragraphs! How often have we said all of those things here on TUK?

The decision makers will need to admit they have been wrong before change happens!

Pigs might fly!!

Meanwhile.... patients continue to suffer.

Madness!!

Exactly! It is madness and I can’t see any of the decision makers ever admitting they are wrong and unfortunately the younger generation they are training are unlikely to be any better.

It’s one thing be a bit cautious but some things are so obvious, in fact I suspect in recent times the treatment of thyroid conditions might be going in reverse.

Alas, gone are the days when your doctor shook your hand, looked you in the eye, asked how you were feeling, listened to what you had to say and treated you accordingly.

Do you know I’m amazed that I don’t have a flying pig emoji, it really would come in most useful.

Just what I need 😉

‘Pigasus, the flying pig, was used by John Steinbeck throughout his life as a symbol of himself, "earthbound but aspiring." Below is Elaine Steinbeck's explanation of the origins of Steinbeck's trademark symbol: The Pigasus symbol came from my husband's fertile, joyful, and often wild imagination.’

Think I would be using it morevas a symbol of how cynical I am

I'm going to read the article but just to say that ChatGTP has absolutely diagnosed that my "doesn't fit any boxes" symptoms and results may be subclinical hyperthyroid because of active nodules. Once I got to the private Endo he said the same thing, we don't all fit into boxes. It's taken me years to get here.

Well done that robot 😉 and good on that private endo. Hopefully you have given his details to TUK for their list of patient friendly endocrinologists.

I got the recommendation from the list 😀 he seems to be great and is absolutely treating on symptoms not my "just hanging onto the bottom of the range TSH" which the NHS endo says is normal despite me being a walking checklist of hyper symptoms. The NHS endo won't even accept the referral from my GP as my TSH is "normal". He also took one look at my Lola bloods and commented on my vitamin D which was just above deficient so the NHS won't treat it and said "you want that above 100". My actually very good GP doesn't think its an issue as its in range....

Your FT3, folate and vit D are far too low

Your T4 to T3 conversion is poor

Some of us are square pegs that cannot be fitted into the round holes medics rely on.

My endo was violently against T3 - he called it a "hippy drug" I told him I used to be a hippy in the '60s (showing my age!) but he would not shift and told me pigs may fly before he ever prescribed it.

I told him I was training mine to fly in formation and I would send him a video. Wild Boar can jump 6 foot standing start. Never saw him again....
