But sometimes, the “brain fog” or fatigue of hypothyroidism doesn’t completely lift with levothyroxine, he notes. “If that’s the case with your child, it’s worth asking the doctor whether adding a second thyroid hormone, called T3, would be beneficial,” Dr. Bauer says. “We are beginning to see benefits for some adults and children using combined T3 and T4 treatment, although, this approach remains controversial and additional research into this approach is needed.” This is likely the main reason why some patients feel better on ‘natural’ thyroid hormone – it is not that it is a ‘natural’ product compared to a ‘synthetic’ product but that the ‘natural’ version of thyroid hormone has both T3 and T4 in the formulation.

Gee - maybe we could slow down the high rate of Teen Suicide?

They most certainly don't and won't see any benefits from combined T3 and T4 treatment if they don't even offer it!

The barrier to starting any form of T3 treatment needs to not exist. Then, and only then, can they seriously argue about benefits.

That's sad. Here in the US T3 and dessicated thyroid are relatively inexpensive. I'd be going rogue if they tried to take away my NDT.

There's precious little of that left, though. RLC and Acella both out of it, at least for now.

Armour Thyroid and ERFA Thyroid (if you can get it from Canada) is about it. :-(

Here, in the UK, the "powers that be" (probably don't have any problems with their thyroid gland) but still make decisions for those who have dysfunctional thyroid glands without taking any notice from the patients who do not recover on levothyroxine at all. These patients are probably given anti-depressants..

The following is the cost of T3 in the UK and few get it prescribed even though very symptomatic on T4.:

LIOTHYRONINE SODIUM

Tablet

Powder for solution for injection

Tablet All products

Liothyronine 5microgram tablets (A A H Pharmaceuticals Ltd)

Active ingredients Size Unit NHS indicative price Drug tariff Drug tariff price

Liothyronine sodium 5 microgram

28 tablet (POM) £98.00 Part VIIIA Category C £98.00

We are aware of how expensive it is, but due to the Brexit we cannot import other thyroid hormones from other countries.

We are also aware that in other countries T3 is much cheaper.

It surprises me that we, the patients, are not permitted to trial options but if you can pay privately you will be able to.

Our British Thyroid Association withdrew T3s without notice, and also don't permit Natural dessicated thyroid hormones (NDT) and prescribed from 1892 onwards (saving millions of lives) has been removed and left many patients who had been prescribed NDTs or T3 or T3/4 were shocked and desperate.

In some countries T3 or NDTs can be bought at an affordable price.
