My gp has agreed to do thyroid peroxidase along with usual nhs thyroid tests. I notice there is another antibody, would that need testing too or would TPO results be enough. I thought of getting a private test done alongside for comparison which had both thyroid antibodies, is that overkill? Thanks

Thyroid antibody testing

The other is Thyroglobulin (Tg) antibodies. You can have low TPO but high Tg antibodies which could suggest Hashimoto's. The NHS don't tend to test Tg antibodies in primary care, this tends to be done in secondary care.
You could wait and see what your GP test results are like, if TPO come back negative and you really want Tg done then you could do a private test where both are tested at the same time.
Make sure any thyroid test is done as early as possible in morning before eating or drinking anything other than water
Are you currently taking any vitamin supplements other than B12 injections?
My TPO came back negative and I tested the TG antibodies on my own, which came back positive. Knowing that didn't change anything in regards to my current or future treatment and I've always made an effort to lay off the gluten and sugars.
Thanks that’s helpful to know, I think I will go with the gp test and do a separate private one with blood taken as Slow Dragon mentions, early in the day. My problem is my tsh has measured high end normal, middle of normal seeming to fluctuate for years but never treatable despite symptoms.
