Thyroid blood tests - privately

Entwicklung profile image
18 Replies

Hi all.

Had some amazing responses to my original post outlining issues I'm having, many suggesting getting a thyroid panel done privately.

I have many blood results for folate, B12, vit D, ferretin etc... but want thyroid thoroughly checked.

Does the picture posted (above or below, not sure where it will sit in the post) seem like a solid option or do I need more details to have a good idea if I have issues?

Many thanks as always.

That looks like a very expensive option for just 5 tests. Suggest you look at monitor my health or Randox or Medicheck & also get vitamins run. - feritin, folate, B12 & D3.

Wow the monitor my health looks like so much better value, thank you.

Little worried about filling several tubes of blood from a finger prick though as mine can be slow even with a normal needle, but suppose persistence pays off here.

Thanks again!

MMH is an NHS lab too so your GP should accept their results.

It pays to follow the prep instructions to the letter for finger prick test to get blood flowing well.

Drink plenty of water. Being well hydrated will make it easier to collect your sample.

Shower before you take your test or run your hands under warm water for a few minutes, as heat improves blood flow.

Do some light exercise (move around, go for a walk, etc.) to get the blood flowing.

Make sure your arm is below your heart level – let gravity do some of the work.

Nails that are too long can make it difficult to collect a sample.

Do not shake the sample vigorously but invert the tube gently 10 times. (gently swirl the tube after each drop of blood).

Do not squeeze (milk) the finger.

Re-warm your hands during collection where needed.

What are the vitamin results you have already or have they been posted before?

Thanks so much for this info and your time. Yeah I posted all the blood results I could find on my original post (you'll find it on my profile I think... I'm still new to the site)... It took a while 😅. I'm lucky to have so many results to review.

I've just chose some bloods with medichecks after reviewing the different options but I chose to go to a clinic because although it's extra cost wise, I just need the simplest option at the moment.

Well done for ordering the test. Just to add to the tips above, I’ve found that drinking plenty of water the day before, in addition to the morning of the collection, really helps . I fully immerse my left hand in a bowl of hot water for a good minute. Then I rotate my arm several times to get the blood flowing to my hand. Another foolproof tip is to slightly twist the lancet when piercing skin. Then, gently massage the hand to encourage the blood flow, but don’t be tempted to squeeze your finger as this can damage the blood sample.

Good luck!

If you add THYROIDUK10 at checkout with Monitor My Health, you get 10% off the test as well. MMH is an NHS lab, so if the results come back and you want to discuss them with your GP, they should accept these, as the tests are performed by an accredited NHS lab.

Ah I went with medichecks in the end but the discount code worked! I hope medichecks is NHS accredited too, I thought it said it was but I did review a few there and I'm foggy ATM. Just trying to get things moving asap.

Thanks for your thoughts here ⭐

Entwicklung I haven't checked to see what you have already had tested, but a pretty good thyroid panel is this one - medichecks.com/products/adv...

There may be cheaper options if you have already had some of the bits done.

MediChecks often discount Thyroid tests on Thursdays.

Ah I'm glad to see this JumpLiving because I've just ordered that exact set! 🙏

Results to follow (I'll make a new thread if that's better).

I ALWAYS recommend you get BOTH TPO and TG antibodies tested at least once

That’s only available via Medichecks, Blue Horizon or Randox

Lola tests look pretty pricey to me.

Factor in the included phlebotomy and it looks better.

Jaydee1507 profile image
Jaydee1507Administrator in reply tohelvella

Probably, but even so, those requiring home phlebotemy are likely in the minority, also not so affordable as many other options.

And the fact that they come to you, makes them look very attractive to me. Good if you have mobility problems too.

Brilliant, thanks SlowDragon... I'm sure the set I've just ordered from medichecks includes both of these as I've never had either done before.

IMPORTANT......If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 5-7 days before ALL BLOOD TESTS , as biotin can falsely affect test results

endocrinenews.endocrine.org...

In week before blood test, when you stop vitamin B complex, you might want to consider taking a separate folate supplement (eg Jarrow methyl folate 400mcg) and continue separate B12 if last test result serum B12 was below 500 or active B12 (private test) under 70:
