I have been taking 5mcg of Morningside Liothyronine twice a day with no side effects but my last prescription turned up as Roma capsules and are making me feel super dizzy and nauseous. The hospital pharmacy has said they will request tablets instead of capsules and I will have to see which brand turns up as they cannot specify. Obviously I am hoping it will be Morningside but will be so disappointed if it isn’t. My GP practice have said they cannot get Morningside. Any advice please as I was feeling quite settled on my brand and dose and this is a setback. Can I buy it privately if it comes to it?
Thank you.

It might just be the capsule causing the upset, worth tipping it out into a shot glass full of water and see if that helps. Roma is much cheaper than Morningside 5mcg so it's likely to be a constant battle.... the other option is to request 20mcg tablets to quarter
I had same experience ie i was on morningside and they gave me roma capsules. I came out in a rash, made an appt with my gp and told him it could only be the capsules. I said i was given them prob cause they were cheaper and he agreed. I told him to specify 20mcg tablets on my script and i would cut them in half and this would be cheaper. He was doubtful but checked prices and agreed it was cheaper doing it that way. Everything good so far. i got info about this from this site, its so very helpful in keeping us up to date
I had an adverse reaction to Roma (dizziness, high anxiety, palpitations) so filled in a yellow card. Now have Morningside only on my prescription… but I can only readily get 10mcg, so cut these in half to get the required dose.
Yes, I must fill in the yellow card. Thanku for the prompt. Once the dizziness had passed I did actually enjoy a spurt of energy which is a rare thing nowadays.
If you can get a valid prescription, you can certainly try to buy Morningside 5 microgram tablets.
You then have two significant issues to overcome. Availability - if they are not available you will not be able to buy them (obviously!). And cost. The last time I checked the NHS cost it was:
Indicative Price: 10094; Start Date: 06-04-2022
Private prescriptions can be a different price but often add a margin to the NHS price. If they add 10% that, it would be £111.04 for 28 tablets.

Thank you. In hindsight it was daft of me to ask about buying myself given the costs but I was panicking. Just need to dig deep and keep pestering and chasing to get me the right brand. It’s exhausting huh? Happens all the time even tho I add brand specific note to my requests. Thanku for responding.
I understand how you feel regarding changing the brand, and yes, it's almost certain roma capsules don't agree with you and you need to stay on Morningside. I too have issues with the fillers and binders in thyroid medications and I have to have Morningside only prescribed. It is a known fact that this is a very common issue and once we are on a brand that suits, we should be kept on same brand..but this never happens.
If it's a hospital Endo who prescribed, then I would ring or email their secretary and explain how you can't tolerate this brand and is making you ill.
I would say to them that you're fine to be prescribed 20mcg tablets, and that you are happy to use a pill cutter to split into quarters. They may be favorable to this as it would be costing a quarter of what the 5mcg Morningside was.
Same if prescribed by GP. Needs to have wrote on prescription, Morningside brand only.
I'm just sorry that you'll have to take the roma capsules that makes you ill till anyone can sort this out..sooner rather than later 🤞
Yes it is so frustrating but happens regularly tbh even tho I always add a note about the brand I need. I didn’t think about asking for different dose so I can split them myself so will suggest that thank you so much.
It's always down to cost and you can argue that being prescribed 20 mcg Morningside is less than half the price of the capsules. 1 box of 20mcg will last you 56 days, 1 box of capsules last 14 daysJust make sure prescriber writes on prescription Morningside only brand
I have looked into it as definitively as I can. I quote Community Pharmacy England in Appendix F of my document.
It is difficult to get specific advice on such issues. We patients shouldn't need to know.

I tried many pharmacies before I found Springfield. Even with the brand stated on the prescription, they all either said they could not provide Morningside, or else claimed they could, then didn’t reliably.
Yes, I was the same but mainly due to the quantity I required or their wholesalers not having Morningside. It is down to costs sadly and it worries my that Morningside has almost doubled in price in a year. Springfield haven't let me down yet, I've just had delivery this morning from them
You could phone your Endocrinologists PA and request they write Morningside 5mcg only on the prescription. That way the pharmacy has to supply it, especially if you’re having issues changing to another brand. I’d call them on Monday to make the request don’t wait until the next prescription is due as it may take a short while to sort out. I get Morningside 5mcg from my hospital pharmacy and there’s been no issues so far
