Morningside liothyronine

Has Morningside liothyronine been taken over? I phoned the pharmacy for my prescription of 20mcg Morningside liothyronine, they said 20mcg wasn't available anymore, only 5mcg and 10mcg. which means I will have to get my prescription changed. But I have also seen on the interntet Iraksin lioythronine 20mcg, made by Morningside? Have they merged with someone else? Thanks!

Iraksin seems just to be a branding.

Many forget (or never knew) Mercury Pharma liothyronine was also branded as Tertroxin. But it could be prescribed and dispensed as "liothyronine" or "Tertroxin". Same tablets!

Have a look here:

(You will have to acknowledge the prompt.)

So Iraksin is just a branding for Morningside?

Gets confusing doesn't it!. perhaps I should phone the pharmacy and see if they can get Iraskin 20mcg?

Yes - Iraksin is just a branding for Morningside. Yes - it is confusing. Yes - good idea as if you spoon feed them they might manage to at least check.

They can make up 20 micrograms by giving you 2 x 10 surely? It is only Controlled drugs like Morphine where they get a little upset if things are not correct.

You are lucky to have a prescription for Liothyronine wish I could get one.

The considerable excess cost (for 2 * 10 rather than 1 * 20) might be a factor in them not being willing to dispense in 10 microgram tablets. (I never have properly understand how pharmacies are paid when things are not super-simple.)

A bit Boring

I have just had a look at costs in the BNF (British National Formulary) I knew the cost basically, but it brought it back full force. Especially look at Teva the cost to the NHS compared to PARTVlllA Category M

(Category M - Drugs which are readily available. The Secretary of State determines the price based on information submitted by manufacturers. Endorsement of pack size is required if more than one pack size is listed. ...)

Does this mean looking at Teva that the Sec of State agreed the price for the NHS was higher, than the price Teva told the Sec of Staten it costed?

I don't know - I have never properly understood the BNF prices.

I Think POM is the NHS price hence being Prescription Only Medication. So Alliance charges the same to NHS as it does perhaps privately? No that does not follow with what I wrote about Category M Ok so same as you I do not understand the NHS pricing.

Hi Judith,

Yes the Pharmacy could give me 2 x 10,but say I have to get another prescription, as cannot give me 2 x 10 when my prescription says 1 x 20! I have just got a prescription, so my Doctor won't give me another one until next month.Very difficult to speak to my Doctor, would probably be about a month if I made an appointment. or possibly a week on the phone. also as Helvella says she will be thinking of the cost of 2 x 10, and say I will have to have 1 x 20 of Teva, which doesn't agree with me.

Perhaps she can write it for one of the other companies. Speak to your Pharmacy and ask if they can get Alliance Health Care T3 or the Advanz T3 . It depends how the script is written in the first place if it specfies the name of the product, or if just Liothyronine then the pharmacy should be able to get the 20 mcg one.

If specifying the name of the brand then speak to receptionist at surgery or secretary and ask if the prescription can be changed, once you know if Pharmacy can do it. If Pharmacy cannot get another brand ask them who can..

Not familiar with Alliance Health Care T3. Can you tell us more?

JudithW in reply to helvella

I know little more than you helvella, I took the name from the BNF list. I have looked up and found Alliance

1 Alliance UniChem merges with Boots to become Alliance Boots 2006

2 Alliance Boots rebrands to Alliance Healthcare 2009

3 Walgreens Boots Alliance completes merger and forms the world's first global pharmacy-led, health and well-being enterprise 2014

Our Pharmaceutical Wholesale Division, which mainly operates under the Alliance Healthcare brand, supplies medicines, other healthcare products and related services to more than 115,000** pharmacies, doctors, health centers and hospitals each year from 300* distribution centers in 11* countries.

But I don't think they have any product other than the same Morningside, Teva and Mercury Pharma (Advanz) that we know - and possibly not all of them! :-)

Hi Judith,

The pharmacy wouldn't give me morningside unless I got my Doctor to put it on the prescription, which has been no problem until now. so not sure if they could give me another brand. As I said so difficult to speak to my Doctor, and I can't keep having it changed every month! Hopefully once the rebranding has taken over with the morningside, everything will settle down again.

My pharmacist phoned me today to say she managed to get me a box of Morningside 20mcg, so I am safe for another month!
