Thyroid tests results help!

Buster76 profile image
8 Replies

HiMy son has had some thyroid tests and I keep getting different answers about the results.

Antibodies are 43

T4 is 22

T3 is 6

Im being told T4 and T3 are 'high end of normal ' and the Antibodies are fine as they are under 60 but everything I read says they should be under 34!

Help please -

Is this hyperthyroidism or not?

HI Buster76, welcome to the forum. :)

I'm afraid we need to see the ranges to know just how high they are - ranges very from lab to lab, so we need those that came with these results. However, I can say that these results are highly unlikely to be hyperthyroidism, even if they are high. But could be Hashi's.

For the antibodies, as I said, we need to see the range that came with the test because it's quite possible that the lab where these tests were done did have a range that went up to 60. There are no standardised ranges. It depends on the calibration of the machine the test is done on, plus the averages of the local population.

Also, you should be aware - or your son should - that there are two different Hashi's antibodies: TPOab and TgAB. And even if the TPOab are negative, the TgAB could be high suggesting Hashi's. Unfortunately, the NHS, in their penny-pinching ignorace, will only test one.

Thank you! The range for T4 was 9 - 23 he was 22

The range for T3 was 3.5 - 6.5 he was 6

The TPOab was 0 - 59 he was 43

He is tired all the time, has tenderness in his lower neck, insomnia, fast heart rate and mood swings!

Thanks for your help.

You're welcome. :)

If I were you, I'd get him to get his Tg antibodies tested. His TPO were so high in-range that Hashi's is very likely. Antibodies fluctuate all the time so it's possible that on another day they could easily be over-range. But with doctors, everything is black and white, there are no grey areas. Whereas in real life...

ESSENTIAL to test vitamin D, folate, B12 and ferritin plus TG antibodies as well

When were his vitamin levels last tested

What vitamin supplements is he taking

Is he vegetarian or vegan?

How old is he

Over 18?

Presumably you have autoimmune thyroid disease?

ALWAYS to all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test (and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test)

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins
