so blood test is confirming grave and this was done privately. I’m lucky as I have an appointment on Thursday with NHS endo. Please give me tips on how I can advocate for myself. I’m 38 and wanting to get pregnant and I don’t have much time. I believe I need to go on PTU? FYI this came in suddenly but I was thinking I’ve had thyroid problems for years as suffered extreme fatigue and been dismissed as my TSH was 2.

Thank you. Yes it suggests I have graves based on my other results too. Seeing nhs endo on Thursday. Gp was trying to give me carbimozole but I won’t take as trying to have a baby. How often are you meant to get blood tests after you start meds? It’s important my levels come down before TTC
While you are on PTU or Carbimazole please take precautions so that you don't get pregnant. Anti-thyroid drugs can cause congenital malformations in the fetus.
Please read ALL this info from the BNF (British National Formulary)
Carbimazole is associated with an increased risk of congenital malformations when used during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester and at high doses (daily dose of 15 mg or more).
Women of childbearing potential should use effective contraception during treatment with carbimazole. It should only be considered in pregnancy after a thorough benefit-risk assessment, and at the lowest effective dose without additional administration of thyroid hormones—close maternal, fetal, and neonatal monitoring is recommended.
Propylthiouracil can be given but the blocking-replacement regimen is not suitable. Propylthiouracil crosses the placenta and in high doses may cause fetal goitre and hypothyroidism—the lowest dose that will control the hyperthyroid state should be used (requirements in Graves’ disease tend to fall during pregnancy).
I think your reply is scare mongering. I have spoken to consultant about medication she said you can take Ptu while pregnant and lots of mothers do. Yes there are rare risks like all drugs. My question was asking how can I advocate and any advice. I’m new to this but luckily I have done a lot of research already.
I wasn't scaremongering. Everyone has to decide for themselves what risks they want to take. If you don't know what risks there are how can you make informed choices?
I know the risks and tbh I wasn’t actually asking about risks of meds in my post. I’ll leave that up to the medical professionals to guide me on that. But cheers for the massage 👍
Kirsty_38, you seem to have taken offense at some of the replies you've received. Perhaps you could clarify what it is you are actually asking for help with so that you get more appropriate responses?
Oh no not at all. I just don’t like that I have been given wrong info. I’m new to this but luckily I’m on it and have done lots of research but if I hadn’t comments like this “While you are on PTU or Carbimazole please take precautions so that you don't get pregnant. Anti-thyroid drugs can cause congenital malformations in the fetus” are super damaging. Imagine I was already pregnant and how scared I would be. Just need people to be wiser with thier wording. I mean saying don’t get pregnant can be super damaging to some people. I was asking for previous post to be more mindful. End it covo now as I’m a busy mum to an Austic son and don’t have time for this over internet. Thanks to all the people and posts. Have been helpful

In which case, I will close this post so that you don't receive any further responses. You can start a new post at another piont when you have more time.
