I drank some dandilion tea yesterday and feel unwell today

Do directic drinks or medication wash out your thyroid hormones in the same was as they do testosterone. I had a couple of cups of danelion tea yesterday, peed loads and started to feel ill. My head started swimming in the same way as it does if I am hypo, my hands are tingling and I am breathless. I have taken a tiny dose extra T3, about 5 mcg. I am on a big dose and usually tolerate it well. I feel slightly better but not well enough to go out incase I fall over. I have no recent bloods to share they are due to be taken in a couple of weeks

Any thoughts

Is it possible you washed out too much potassium? Diuretics can cause potassium loss.

You could try taking something like Dioralyte (oral rehydration salts).

And/or eat a banana or two - they allegedly contain potassium.

Sounds like you’re dehydrated which can mean electrolyte loss.

You can make a home made electrolyte drink:

How long a gap did you leave between taking your thyroid medication and drinking the tea? Some of the compounds in dandelion might interfere with the processing of medication in the liver, as they compete for the enzyme responsible for the metabolism of drugs (to be precise CYP 450). So you may have had less thyroxine available than usually.

As others have mentioned, dandelion is a diuretic and can cause the loss of minerals, however, you would have to drink some serious amounts of tea for that to happen, unless you were already low on electrolytes before?

I think there was about a hours gap. I drank two cups in the morning.I think you are right about dandellion interfering. I certainly felt low in thyroid hormones. Thankyou for an excellent answer.

No worries, if you enjoy dandelion tea, just try to have at least a 4h gap after you have taken your thyroid meds, so there is no interference . Hopefully that should be fine.
