Are they? I've never heard that before. Why? I don't think there's any connection. And calcium supplements are not a good thing to take unless you absolutely need them. They are difficult to absorb at a cellular level and the calcium tends to build up in the arteries and soft tissues. And very few people ever really need them.
There are several articles about calcium supplements in general on my profile if you want to take a look.
Thankyou ๐๐ผ. I'm brain foggy sorry! Of course. But I know there's a lot of wisdom here! No excuse
Yes calcium for hip/bone. Iv not taken them as I sensed there are negs! It's magnesium I think that sends it to the right places not the arteries! but other supps probably better anyway. Il stop wasting them & take off prescription. !

Magnesium and Vitamin K2
You don't need excess calcium to have good bones. And most people get quite enough frpm their food. Excess is dangerous.
Magnesium is very, very important for bones - more important than calcium. I've never heard that it helps with absorption of calcium. It's true that vit K2 does help calcium to be absorbed by teeth and bones, but that is calcium from food. Calcium supplements are another thing entirely, and I'm not sure that K2 would be of much help, there.
Yeah. Sadly the nhs have a bit to go
Thanks. Which magnesium as a few types ๐ค
Depends what you want it to do for you. If you're constipated, for example, magnesium citrate is the one to go for. But if you don't have a health-driven preference, all forms are good for bones.
Have a look at this article, it explains it better than I can:

Great thanks.
Good old Epsom salts to soak feet. Prob the crudest ๐
Hi Cup-cake7
Hereโs the post I did on Magnesium asking the same question:

Good links to articles on the different types, and replies for ones people chose.
donโt you need calcium if you have no parathyroids ?
Yes but hypoparathyroidism and hypothyroidism are two different things, not related.
I'm not very well up on parathyroids but I do know they control calcium levels. And I seem to recall people saying they need to take calcium because they have hypoparathyroidism. But there's no connection between thyroids and parathyroids except their geographical location.

Vitamin D is absolutely crucial for Calcium absorption and bone health. And most folks who live in the Northern Hemisphere are actually deficient unless they spend a lot of time in the sun with it directly on their skin, or are taking supplements. If you're taking magnesium to keep your calcium in balance, I'd recommend vitamin D as well. Up to 1000IU a day.
Also, older women often do need Calcium supplements. If you are past menopause you should have about 1200 mg a day.
I completely agree that through the diet is best (and don't take a calcium supplement WITH your thyroid medication bc it can block absorption)-- but if you are lactose intolerant, especially, or don't eat much dairy, look at your diet and kind of add it up for a few days to make sure you are getting enough.
Calcium absorbs best with acid. So, supplemented orange juice is actually a good option- again, esp if you don't drink or eat much dairy.
If you do need to take calcium supplements, calcium citrate is better absorbed than most of the forms.
best,

Many thanks ๐๐ผ. I'm at a point in time just need clear best advice. I don't know how others go on but researching can be quite draining & overwhelming. ๐
Trouble is, I for one do not know what you are talking about regarding "nhs calcium vits in tube".
Are you meaning Calcichew 500mg Chewable Tablets ?
calcium carbonate
Xylitol (967)
Povidone
Magnesium stearate
Sucralose (E955)
Isomalt (E953)
Flavouring (orange)
Mono, di-fatty acid glycerides

Without establishing that, it is difficult to be helpful.
I had these prescribed in 2018 after a bone break. Lowish density but no-one talked about my subclinical hypothyroidism! To answer your question. As far as I know you'll only get good absorption with Vitamin D3 plus K2. It's the K2 that's important because you don't want that extra calcium setting ip shop in your arteries. There are studies on this. I personally do not take those calcium tabs anymore. I opted for more walking and have recently taken first baby steps in resistance training.
Thanks. Me too, after a break
Looking at the algae vits and funnily Iv been looking into resistance too, good luck with it
Gotta say starting at 68 it was a shock ๐ฒ. I'm flexible after decades of yoga but this was very new. If you're an older person make sure you get good guidance, not a simple personal trainer. My person is also a physio.
Good tip. Thankyou. How did you locate him/her
Hi, I have been taking a supplement fron algae called lithotamnium which is very good for bones since contains tons of minerals , and I take magnรฉsium and cod liver oil for vitamin D, hope this can help
Didn't realise vit D from cod liver oil. I take omega so exspect its the same
Cod liver oil contains vitamin A which you can easily get toxic from. The sea isn't the healthiest place for fish nowadays. Vitamin d in good oil like olive, avocado or coconut oil
thanks for this. Looks really good
Glad you got the answer re calcium,I find the GPS oftern push calcium supplements when you have osteopenia they did with me but I asked them to check my bloods and dietary intake which were both good.agree re magnesium and epsom salts foot bath as good to absorb it that way through skin one less thing to take orally!.
With my Levo I take that early morning before food /tea and vitamins supplements with evening meal as works for me!
When I was told I have Osteopenia after a DEXA scan, my GP prescribed those chewable calcium things. Dreadful stuff. After working out when I could take them away from my Levo and T3 doses I took one a day for a week. My tummy bloated and I felt 6 months pregnant and the wind in me was dire. Obviously I threw them away. I take vitD with k2 and also magnesium capsules. Thereโs plenty of food with calcium and you can get a magnesium and calcium lotion from Betteryou which is good for a little boost. I get my magnesium capsules from The Autoimmune Institute. Suit me well. A decent size to swallow and no nasty fillers. VitD and k2 spray from Betteryou.
And if you can move about ok, just do some weight bearing exercise. Donโt overdo it though โบ๏ธ๐ง
Lovely. Thanks a lot helpful! Not heard of Auto society il have a gander! These tips are amazing

Very interesting and Iโm not in the least surprised by most of it. I donโt take any medication for bones from a GP. I had the full hip and spine scan. Iโm on vitD, k2 and mg for my general health. My mum has full osteoporosis, but itโs only recently that Iโve known how severe. Basically she has been ignored by her docs since she could not tolerate the medication prescribed and now she has memory issues so she doesnโt remember being told she has it anyway. Luckily Iโve been keeping her vitD levels very good for the last 4 years (sheโs 86). Theyโve decided she will have the injections to help her bones now at her surgery since a consultant from the hospital checked up on her health. I donโt know about all this private personal health stuff, because with something that can be hereditary I think it would be very sensible to tell any children about health issues from day 1. And a doctor should recommend any adult to talk about these things. But who am I to be telling the big wigs?
Iโm feeling fairly good more often than not at the moment. Mostly due to info on this site. So thanks once again humanbean for your time in replying to my message โบ๏ธ
Yes I was told osteopenia after breaking wrist. I asked a few times to get a scan. Whether it's a postcode thing I'm unsure but feel it wasn't taken seriously at 68 and having a break. Although I did go flying when I fell and just given these calcichews. Iv read there's a lot more to bone health. So it's back to drawing board. It's not just about level of osteopenia then๐ค. A friend runs marathons many of them. She has osteoporosis. No pain whatsoever. She is stuck thin. I hope this carries on for her
Hi i take the calcium tbs they were prescribed for me for helping my back i have been using them for years . They are called tutti fruited and contain vitamin D i find them easy to chew.
Didnโt really notice any difference ๐คฃ
๐. Like me. I wish I reacted a bit more to what I take it would be good indication. I don't think those ones are for me though
I was prescribed these after a very early breast cancer diagnosis in 2021, and had to stop cold turkey the HRT I had been on for 35 years! They were like eating blackboard chalk and I couldn't cope with that! I stopped taking them shortly afterwards. I do take Vit D & K2, and electrolytes if magnesium and potassium levels are low and I know as I get cramp at night!.
I don't rate them tbh. A bit crude if it makes sense
What are electrolytes il need to put on list to google ๐ I up my gut health if I get heart burn it's an indication I get and can usually link it to wheat
I know br cancer the concern if it's ostregen based is this what you mean, I read it's not all of them though. Understand that's a sensitive topic
