Beta Blockers do they reduce T4 to T3

I have been trying for the past two years to regain my old levels of fitness. I had been taking 2.25 to 2.5 grains of Thyroid s for years. I have been taking Levo with T3 and it's not worked for me.

My blood pressure is perfect but I have developed a high heart rate which I have been trying to lower. My vagus nerve is misbehaving.

I had to visit the doctor last week to get a note for a blood test. Anyway, he took my readings as per usual and gave me a prescription for a Beta Blocker for the high heart rate.

I tried to explain that it was the vagus nerve but he never listens. Anyway, I am trying to correct it by myself as I don't like taking medications if not needed.

When by change I looked up BETA BLOCKERS they were described as making Hyperthyroid patients feel better. I then read that they also block T4 conversion to T3. I have no Thyroid.

Has anyone else read this.

Which beta blocker have you been prescribed

Propranolol is the one that affects thyroid uptake and conversion

I always check on the prescription the one prescribed is called Bisoprolol I, therefore, assume that it's the same as Propranolol but French. Thank you, I wanted to confirm my reasoning.

At the moment it's Ice Packs, and 10 mins of Qi Gong every morning.

It just goes to show that just because you can get to see a doctor, same day appointment you still have to check what's been prescribed.

It's going to be hard to sort out my Vagus nerve but I'm having a go. Blood Pressure this morning after Qi Gong was 113/80 Heart Rate 103. I was also thinking that having a high heart rate must be using up my T3 faster.

Bisoprolol is NOT propranolol.

The French call Propranolol the same as we do in English.

I see thank you I wasn't sure it may be safe to take a small amount say 2.5 mg then. I will do more research

I need 100mcg T3-only and once read in a research paper that Atenolol be used to stabilise heart rate in people with a form of Thyroid Hormone Resistance.....or I guess hyperthyroidism

I discussed this with my GP who prescribed 25mg Atenolol daily which I've taken successfully for a number of years. RHR is around 65bpm

All beta blockers are not the same as SlowDragon points out.

Are you sure you are not overmedicated.....do you have recent labs?

I expect you know that I grain/60mcg NDT = 9mcg T3 and 38mcg T4

"Perfect" blood pressure may not mean your thyroid medication is correct....for example 113/80 Heart Rate 103.

RHR of 103 needs attention

N̈ormal range for RHR is 60 to 100bpm

What dose(s) of thyroid medication are you currently taking?

I doubt the vagus nerve is playing any significant role it is a messenger, but can, I understand, be "fired up" with appropriate massage and deep breathing

Since you don't like taking medication if not needed I'd be inclned to research the use of beta blockers and check your thyroid hormone levels.

Have you optimised vit D, vit B12, folate and ferritin which support thyroid function

It's interesting I am sure that I have overmedicated myself in the past two years trying different things.

I never had a problem before 2022 when my new batch of thyroid s never worked.

I also have the problem of living in France and not able to obtain private blood tests.

Anyway I now have a more pressing problem that needs sorting, I've gone from running, yoga and swimming to couch potato. Beta Blockers are helpful for patients with Hyperthyroidism that's what I keep reading, so not for me without a thyroid.

Thanks for your comments I have taken them all on board.

I never had gut problems of Hashi either so slightly different to most on the site.

Not what you're looking for?
