Hi. This post isn’t about me but looking for info to help my daughter. She has had low kidney function since she had a tummy bug aged 11. She is now mid 40s and at her latest kidney review was told her parathyroid blood level was high. She showed me the numbers but I can’t remember them - they were not just high in range but well over the top of the range. They are increasing her vitamin D from taking twice a week to every day. I suspect this is totally inadequate but although I’ve been hypothyroid for decades I realise I know nothing about parathyroid. Can someone give me a beginners guide please?

Hi Highland Mo,
Head over to
Parathyroid UK
This website has lots of information. Your daughter needs her calcium levels checking too.
Good luck.
If they are bumping up her vit D then they must think it is low - I'd check out the range, see if she's low and if so, get on 5,000iu daily. Low vit D can lead to high parathyroid hormone which will raise calcium in the bloodstream. If D reverts to normal after supplementing and PT hormone is still high, and calcium high or even higher end of normal, then she may have primary hyperparathyroidism which is usually due to an adenoma on one of the parathyroud glands.
I've been through surgery for this twice.
The absoliute best places to go for education and support are
HyperparathyroidUK Action for Change , both website and FB group (very supportive).
Plus videos and anything from Dr Baba Lariat, top US parathyroid surgeon.
Good luck!
Thank you, everyone. I’ll look all of these up.
