Sore mouth & tongue

My mouth keeps feeling sore, this affects my tongue, roof of mouth & gums, also feels sensitive & hot. I have several health issues including hypothyroidism, ME/CFS, fibromyalgia & hypertension so not sure if any of these could be the cause?

Advice appreciated 🤞

In my case, this is a classic symptom of my B12/Folate being low.

Have you had vitamins tested?

Thank you, I don’t know but will look into it 🥰

If your GP won’t test, you can get home tests via Medichecks or Blue Horizon

It took me years to discover that my swollen mouth was due to an intolerance to potato.

Oh wow! I’ve been wondering if certain foods irritate my mouth.

hi, from my experience it's some kind of food intolerance I advise you ask for a food intolerance test

How is your thyroid doing? Do you have any blood test results for TSH, FT4 and FT3? Everything you mention can be caused or misdiagnosed because of low thyroid.

Aside from that sore mouth can have a lot of causes. I, for example, get it from citrus. But I also was much more sensitive when my thyroid hormones were not optimal.

Thank you, not sure if I’m due a blood test?

I still don't know the exact cause of my sore mouth, sore tongue, and repeated mouth ulcers although my years and years of smoking will have had something to do with it. (I stopped 15 years ago.) Having said that, I used to get masses of mouth ulcers as a child, years before I ever started smoking, so whatever the cause it is more complicated than just my smoking.

The things I've found that help slightly reduce my problems are :

1) Avoid toothpaste containing sodium lauryl sulfate.

2) Experiment with using toothpaste with or without fluoride. I avoid it, but it might make no difference to some people.

3) Use an electric toothbrush but don't press too hard.

4) If you can floss, do so. If it causes your gums to bleed I've found vitamin C helps with that a lot.

4) Keep Vitamin B12 and folate at optimal levels. For me personally, I keep my B12 (both serum B12 and active B12) at the top of the range. If I allow my levels to drop my mouth problems get worse for a while, then adding in B12 and folate supplements might make it worse still for a couple of weeks. Then as my levels rise the soreness and ulcers improve.

I supplement B12 with methylcobalamin and folate with methylfolate. They are both easy to find online.

5) I use this mouthwash - they are both the same, just different flavours. I prefer the original flavour :

superdrug.com/mouth-ulcer-t...

superdrug.com/mouth-ulcer-t...

6) I also use this as the last step in my toothbrushing routine - Bee Health Propolis 50 ml :

dolphinfitness.co.uk/en/bee...

I've tried all sorts of things promising to cut the pain in my mouth, gums, roof of my mouth, and tongue. The Propolis was one of my desperation experiments, but to my surprise it really does help me a lot. It reduces the pain in my ulcers and they seem to heal up faster than they do without it.

I remember a long time ago using propolis lozenges that had a toffee-like consistency for throat problems. They don't seem to be available now.

I looked at the spray you recommended, and unfortunately it contains mint and menthol, neither of which I can tolerate :-( It sounds very good otherwise.

This site has lots of Bee Health Propolis products in various forms. Amazon has some as well.

dolphinfitness.co.uk/en/bee...

You might find something that you can tolerate.

For example :

dolphinfitness.co.uk/en/bee...

Ingredients : Standardised purified propolis resin, Bulking agent (microcrystalline cellulose), disintegrant (croscarmellose sodium), anti-caking agents (magnesium stearate, silicon dioxide)

I had these symptoms about 3 years ago I thought it was a dental problem but they found nothing wrong I went to the doctor again nothing obviously wrong it was hard to explain to anyone. I kept trying to find the answer and eventually found a woman with the same problem and it's called "Burning mouth syndrome "

Back to the doctor who was willing to prescribe an antiviral called Valclovir 1000mg twice a day for as long as it took in my case it was gone after a few weeks so there's your cure

That's interesting, I have burning mouth but mine seems caused by anxiety or stress. I take Valtrex for cold sores, which seems also affected with stress but I take only as needed, start as soon as I feel something. My doctor never suggested it for burning mouth. She did put me on buspirone which seems to help a lot. Thanks, I will ask about this.

Yes try it you have nothing to lose but the burning mouth which is a really strange but curable complaint hope your doctor's willing to put you on it for a few months to try it as it will also get rid of your cold sores as well

Thank you, I’ve heard the term burning mouth but wasn’t sure if that’s what I had, it seemed to ease for a while then flare again. Maybe it is stress related? X

fairgo45 in reply toSuei

No I dont think it's anything to do with stress I have a link somewhere all about it I'll try and post it for you it certainly is a very odd complaint but irritating rather than dangerous

I'd never heard this before, how fascinating. None of the many consultants and practitioners I've seen over the ten years I've had this has mentioned it. I will look into this. Many thanks.

I know it's amazing and I had to find it for myself doctors didn't know how to treat it but my GP had an open mind and was willing to try it so good luck with yours as well

I found out about food intolerances many years ago. My daughter had tested positive for milk, so as my joints and hands were beginning to seize up I thought I'd try it.

My results in order of effect were Oats (recent porridge for breakfast), Wheat, Alcohol (I could have told them that),........ Chocolate, etc. Not tested for potato at that stage.

Gave up the oats and wheat and within 2 or 3 months my joints were much improved. To my delight my indigestion which I'd had for years had cleared up. Bonus!

I can take chocolate occasionally. Recent winter thought I'd have hot chocolate before bed. After a couple of weeks I wasn't feeling too good - then remembered the chocolate on the list, so now have hot milk without the chocolate and feel better.

I really think I'd be in a wheelchair by now if I hadn't found out the wheat/oats problem. I'm not coeliac but food without wheat and oats is in the 'free from' section. Unfortunately too many products have potato / potato starch in them so I have to read labels carefully.

I get what is called burning mouth syndrome. Spices affect my mouth during a flare. I get sores, my throat, tongue, gums, actually the whole mouth burns and is sensitive to foods. This is caused all from anxiety/ stress for me. Once I started Buspirone, after a couple month I have it less unless something stressful happens but it goes away faster. Good luck.

I believe this can be a menopausal symptom.

I have this when I eat gluten (or something else that I have no idea I react to) I get mouth ulcers, the roof of my mouth shreds and it’s really uncomfortable. Corsodil mouthwash heals it but again makes my mouth feel really uncomfortable for a couple of days.
