Hi Thyroid UK Community,
I think Berberine, and selenium sounds like it could be beneficial, from what I have researched. There are studies to support that they could be beneficial. Does anyone have thoughts?

Selenium is very good. Many with hyper use it as can help with eye complications which can sometimes occur with Graves & other thyroid issues.
You can take 200mcg for up to 6 months. Then reduce to 100mcg. Can be brought over the counter. Bear in mind selenium rich food can take you over the maximum requirement.
I’ve no experience of berberine.
Here’s a link which will take you to other discussing it, seems to help sone with appetite / energy levels. Said to help microbiome.
Persianne,
Selenium is hugely beneficial as is a part of thyroid hormone production and conversion process. There are also many studies showing selenium to reduce TPOAb (thyroid antibodies). Melissa Cohen (nutritionist adviser to ThyroidUK) recommends a daily dose of 100mcg long term for people with thyroid issues, and 200mcg short term to address a deficiency.
Berberine has multiple effects and is primarily great for balancing blood sugar’s destabilised by Hashi and cortisol issues, reducing cholesterol and chronic inflammation. Therefore, be aware caution is needed if you are taking meds for other conditions. I was told it can’t be taken long term. I took mine cyclically for about a year - something like 6 weeks on, two weeks off as it can be hard in the liver (but that might have been because I was chelating at the time). .
I started taking Berberine from Super Botanic a couple of months ago because like you, I’ve read about the benefits and I was worried that I was headed towards insulin resistance. I noticed that I’m less hungry during the day and in the evening, and evenings were my main issue because I would eat and not think about nutrition facts. I’m not sure if it had any other effects because I haven’t measured anything.
