Vitamin D levels

Hi guys, have a blood test at my GP tomorrow morning after I sent a message about getting my Vit D, Folate, Ferritin, B12 etc tested

Is it the case now that if deficient, GPs won't treat? My levels a couple of years ago were 16 so very deficient

Just worried if it comes back that low again, that GP won't treat

What do you mean won't treat? Do you mean won't prescribe vitamin D? Because you can easily just buy vitamin D tablets. No need for a prescription.

Hey rosael56 , when it was last checked a few years back and very deficient with level of 16, a high loading dose was prescribed. I mean is the loadimg dose atill prescribed?

Ah I see. As far as I know GPs still prescribe if necessary, although when mine was very low I was just advised to take high dose supplements (8000iu) daily to tackle it.

Ah, what level was yours at when you had to take the 8000iu? My last result was this

Serum total 25-hydroxy vitamin D level 16 nmol/L [> 51.0]; <30 nmol/L:Vitamin D deficiency

Mine was 26 I believe. Bit higher than yours but not by much :)

I (and many others on this board) have used this:

grassrootshealth.net/projec...

I’m happy to report that for me it actually worked! I followed its guidance for loading dose, then daily, and in 2-3 months I was exactly where I wanted to be.

Don’t forget about 100 mcgs of Vitamin K along with to avoid calcification of soft tissues vs the bones/teeth we want it to direct towards.

Thanks FallingInReverse :) for the higher loading doses they are a bit expensive as I'm unemployed, thats why I'm wondering if GPs still prescribe the loading dose? I know I'd have to fund the maintenance dose

10,000iu p d is not too much. Take with K2.

For some people 10,000 a day would be too much.

I’ve a feeling I read recently that GP’s don’t prescribe Vit D anymore. However with a level so low they may still do a loading dose. x

I’m in the UK. Just been prescribed Hux D3 20,000 IU for the same problem, but the pharmacist told me it was cheaper to buy over the counter than the prescription. This obviously isn’t the case if you get free prescriptions, but it cost me £6.50 for an 8-week supply.

If you get free prescriptions tell the GP, they absolutely should prescribe for those on low income. Good luck with your tests!

Not to disagree that GPs have a difficult job assessing the income level of patients in order to decide whether or not to prescribe. And there is no other way than this of getting such things if people cannot afford them.

But everyone in the UK outside England gets "free" prescriptions! So that doesn't constitute a basis for making a decision.

I’m in England, there a lot of us and we’re not getting free prescriptions unless eligible.

I'm on Employment Support Allowance, so hopefully the GP might consider it :)
