Hashimoto's

Hello everyone, I'm slightly confused.Tested positive for TPO[OVER 100) and heterogeneous thyroid (scan). Recently seen my GP and asked if I have Hashimoto's. Got told I don't? I thought I did from the research I've done? Got my retest bloods(3 month) soon so hopefully have more information then. Been referred to an endocrinologist and it looking like August when I will be seen. Any advice on what questions to ask?

Can you edit above to include ranges (in brackets after results) as these can vary between laboratories.

Are the results you just posted the same from 2 months ago?

Did the GP actually say you didn’t have Hashis? Or that he couldn’t diagnose you officially maybe until a repeat test? When is your next blood test?

And what are your symptoms?

Yes,they are the same results. GP said i dont have Hashimotos but things could change. Retest 28th March. My symptoms are mainly fatigue and weight gain. Also feel the cold morr than i used too. Thanks.

Ask him if he actually knows what Hashimoto's is. Because a lot of them don't. And, in any case, they don't tend to call it that. They call it Autoimmune Thyroiditis. And, if your TPO antibodies are that high, you do have something autoimmune going on. And given the level of your TSH it has to be Hashi's.

Yeah thats what i was thinking. Will discuss again with GP when i get my bloods retested. Thanks.

In U.K. medics hardly ever refer to autoimmune thyroid disease as Hashimoto’s (or Ord’s thyroiditis)

Your high thyroid antibodies confirms autoimmune thyroid disease

Technically

Autoimmune thyroid disease with goitre is Hashimoto’s

Autoimmune thyroid disease without goitre is Ord’s thyroiditis.

Both are autoimmune and generally called Hashimoto’s.

Low vitamin levels are extremely common when hypothyroid, especially with autoimmune thyroid disease

Have you had vitamin D, folate, B12 and ferritin levels tested if not get these included at next test

Recommended that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Starting levothyroxine - flow chart

Two tests 6 weeks apart with TSH, over 5, high thyroid antibodies and symptoms ……you should be started on levothyroxine

Looking at your profile you are also taking PPI, Lansoprazole.

GP should test vitamin levels of patients on long term PPI

Ppi like Lansoprazole will tend lower vitamin levels

My lipids and sugars have gone up recently. Looking at having the cholesterol injection and im trying my best to get my sugars down. Currently at 42,just over the cut off (41) Thanks

SlowDragon profile image
SlowDragonAdministrator in reply toTicman

High cholesterol directly linked to being hypothyroid and will improve once on correct dose replacement thyroid hormones

nhs.uk/conditions/statins/c...

If you have an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), treatment may be delayed until this problem is treated. This is because having an underactive thyroid can lead to an increased cholesterol level, and treating hypothyroidism may cause your cholesterol level to decrease, without the need for statins. Statins are also more likely to cause muscle damage in people with an underactive thyroid.

Im also taking a daily multi vitamin but will ask GP to test for vitamins. Thanks.

SlowDragonAdministrator in reply toTicman

Multivitamins never recommended on here

Usually cheap, poorly absorbed ingredients.

You shouldn’t supplement iron unless tested first

Iodine not recommended for anyone with Hashimoto’s

Essential to stop all supplements that contain biotin 5-7 days before all blood tests as biotin can falsely affect test results

Suggest you Stop multivitamins and get tested

Hi there, I also want to re-surface this reply you got a couple months ago, as it's very clear and helpful

healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

You should read that, and re-read SlowDragon's responses. These should give you confidence in understanding your body right now. And that confidence will help you navigate your next GP visit when they say things that aren't quite true, or they use ambiguous language that isn't quite accurate.

Let us know how you get on!
