I have been putting together the little I have learned about my thyroid and symptoms and I am going to speak with my GP.
I have one question about Hashimoto's. Is it treated in the same way as Hypothyroidism? I want to ask my GP to let me try Levothyroxine. I have fibroids and thyroid cysts which from what I have gathered are an indication of Hashimoto's. I know that hashi's is gut related so low stomach acid and vitamins but would levothyroxine help or make worse?
Thank you in advance

Hi Ad78, I have the same issue. Levothyroxine doesn't help with Hashimoto. If you have under active thyroid as well please read interesting information in the link below. It's all well explained which includes the well covered approach to all thyroid issues. However, with Hashimoto you need to look into your diet and digestive problems. There's a autoimmune protocol for thyroiditis. I did deep dive on how to solve the problem and tell you that the best way to put thyroiditis into remission is start with this protocol. Along side of it treat yourself with anti helminthic which you can find on iHerb (black walnut and cloves) this will activate your liver function also. Take digestive enzymes to help with digestion. Reduce stress (rhadiola ) can help with it or Adreno Complex from Biocare. It's a complex approach. The best bet is visit a naturopath for advice. Also check your ferritin levels. But it all starts with digestive system and diet. Hope it helps.
Thank you. I have tried black walnut and cloves in the past. And naturopaths who just took my money. If you have worked with a good one, would you mind sending me a private message please? I will order black walnut and cloves again. Your post is very helpful. Thank you
Are you on strictly gluten free diet and/or dairy free
Or tried them
Looking at previous posts and results, GP very unlikely to agree to prescribe levothyroxine
You might get more positive outcome with a thyroid specialist, especially because of low cortisol
Here’s link for how to request Thyroid U.K.list of private Doctors emailed to you, but within the email a link to download list of recommended thyroid specialist endocrinologists
Ideally choose an endocrinologist to see privately initially and who also does NHS consultations
I printed all my private tests and comments from various support groups and went to see my GP this morning. He has done a referral to an endocrinologist and prescribed me 25mg Levothyroxine to try and see if it helps. Now I am scared hahaha. Really really hoping it helps. Does it matter that it is a low dose
5 years ago i got a good result of 25mcg Levo that confrimed for me that thyroid problems might be at play however long term 25mcg can be too low a dose to help much yet enough to push your bloods further into range which passive doctors will take as evidence there is nothing wrong with you. A double edged sword. But you have started a process and a journey which has to be positive assumgin it is a thyroid issue. Best to keep the relationship open and friendly with GP whilst arming yourself to the teeth with knowledge forhwhen/if GP flakes out on helping you much further. But if they do flake out dont blame them, they are working within limiting guidlines on a not well undestood contdition and organ, budget constraints and a condition which needs actions beyond prescription drugs which many instiutional healthcare providers (e.g. NHS) are not set up for. good luck.
Initially when I took to Levo well. I remember having some scatty (hyper) moments in the first few months as my body adjusted. These lasted a couple of days each time about 3 times but never came back. About week 3 a fog lifted ( I remember I was in a park when I realised). Long term I struggled up and down but as documented on my bio something else was at play (sleep apnea) so the experience is all a bit specific to me. Which is to the point as both the condition and response to synthetic hormone is very induvidual. I do suggest keep reading the every good content on here (from the admins) - you may have to re-learn it multiple times on your journey. Last year I switched to personally bought T3 as I wanted a drug which could manage myself and switch doses more quickly when I had my sleep problems. And I got fed up with the 'your bloods are in range' BS from GPs just I just gave up trying to get proper thyroid care from them. But I wouldnt be in a rush to go down T3 route if thats what you are thinking, levo works for many people though as said earlier in post, it is just a hormone substitute - it doesnt 'fix' the undelyign problem, that requires other actions. I see Hashimotos as a journey and the path to being hypo is different in everyone and can take years to develop (if at all). Dont expect too much from the endo, some of them know less about the thyroid than the GPs or just dont care to step out of the narrow NICE guidelines. happy to answer qs here on by DM.
Thank you. You have been very helpful. I was worried. I am on day 2 now. I am interested in the "underlying" causes when and if convenient for you. Thank you
