Hi Iv been prescribed T3 10mcg by the endo and my GP was happy to agree and iv been taking it along side my levo for 5 years no issues , iv recently moved and had to change GP guess what , they are querying if I need T3 as its not cost effective ? I guessed there would be a problem as its expensive, they said we see from your records you used to obtain it yourself ? I explained I no longer needed to as the endo and previous surgery were happy to prescribe it , they now want me to have a telephone review with the gp to see if they can increase my T4 instead of giving me T3 , 🤬 I explained I don't convert and have barely any thyroid left due to hashimotos disease , ( she was clueless) worse case scenario they are going to take me off T3 and il be bed bound like I was 5 years ago , I can still source it privately ( USA) but can't remember dose as they sell it by the grain ? Can someone please give me the dose in grain for 10mcg please and thank you 😊
Liothyronine : Hi Iv been prescribed T3 10mcg by... - Thyroid UK
Liothyronine
No, it's NDT that is measured in grains, not synthetic T3. That is measured in mcg.
T3 is now a lot cheaper than it was a year ago even. Cost can be as low as 60p per 20mcg tablet so don't let them use cost as an excuse.
A GP is not allowed to change your T3 prescription unless you have seen an Endocrinologist.
I'd suggest you get yourself a copy of the Thyroid UK doctors and Endocrinologist list, find one or two near you, make a new post asking for feedback on them via private message. Ask for a referral to your preferred Endo.

Good luck!
”T3 is not cost effective.” For whom? It’s very cost effective for the patient. They can have a life, look after their families etc etc. However it’s not really cost effective for the GP practice because then they must prescribe for the multiple Co-morbidities and investigations, created for the under medicated patient. Endocrinologist Perros (who also appears to be anti T3) has noticed this effect on the patient. Unfortunately he still can’t work out why! Therefore no assistance whatsoever to the NHS finances in refusing to prescribe T3. T3 is someone’s vanity project and you are being expected to pay for it with your health OR if you are lucky, be able to pay for it yourself. It’s a shameful sham.
