Low levels of vitamin B12 can cause lots of problems with the tongue, including the scalloped tongue. Have you tested yours recently? And folate is needed for the body to make use of B12, so testing that is a good idea too.

Had it all tested so 🤞

It would be worth posting your results with ranges. Doctors and testing companies think B12 is fine if it is in range even though the ranges are often extremely low.

You had huge increase in dose levothyroxine from 50mcg to 100mcg

How long ago was this?

Previous post with advice on how to improve low vitamin levels

healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

What vitamin supplements have you been taking

Remember all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

stop vitamin B complex 5-7 days before any test

Instead take daily folate and continue separate B12

8 weeks ago, hence blood tests this morning. Spoke to my DR who thinks its related to the hashimotos, need to wait for results but feels a referral to a special would be beneficial as also feeling like I have a tablet stuck in my throat and hoarse voice.

The only supplement I have been taking is Will Powders thyroid support and biotin. I always stop meds prior to blood tests as advised previously. Didn’t want to start supplementing anything else until I understood what I need if that makes sense?

SlowDragon profile image
SlowDragonAdministrator in reply toVorney

you mean this supplement?

willpowders.com/products/th...

it contains iodine NOT recommended for anyone with autoimmune thyroid disease on Levo

Levothyroxine contains all the iodine you need

Never take anything called thyroid support with levothyroxine

Never take any supplements within 2 hours of levothyroxine

Any supplements that contain iron, magnesium, vitamin D or calcium at least 4 hours away from levothyroxine

Thankyou, I wasn’t aware of that. I tried it as Davinia really does her research, and it said u could take it alongside levo?

I take her bovine collagen, mct creamer and oil each morning in coffee as also perimenopausal and early onset osteoarthritis. My nails have been crap and hair loss. Is it me who just finds researching this condition and understanding what u should/shouldnt do difficult? It’s an absolute minefield

FAQ:Can I take this Thyroid precursor if I am on Lethyroxine or Levythyroxine?

Yes, this product contains the nutrient precursors that the body uses to improve the function of both T3 and T4.

I would NOT trust information from anyone who cannot even spell levothyroxine in their FAQ! (The company address is Clitheroe, Lancashire, so can't be excused by language issues).

Can't spell levothyroxine!

It’s an absolute minefield

It most certainly is. It's bad enough when you are dealing with information from people who are trying their hardest to be helpful and are really well informed.

Let alone when they are inspired by profit above anything else and are less than well informed.

Thankyou for all of your comments.

I have emailed Will Powders directly and I am awaiting a response.

In the meantime my bloods are back as well as a full blood count the following were included:

TSH 1.58

Magnesium 0.77 mmol/L

Vitamin D 61 nmol/L

B12 78 pmol/L

Serum ferritin 43 ug/L

Serum folate 3.9 ug/L

Spoke to a very dismissive DR this morning who immediately said your bloods are fine. I responded so why am I still experiencing so many symptoms(vertigo, tongue issues, swollen fingers, aching joints, hoarse voice, the feeling something is stuck in my throat, dry mouth and skin)

He responded well ur perimenopausal! I said I know I am on HRT?? Why do drs always blame periods/menopause when women are struggling?? He couldn’t respond? I said so its normal for my tongue to peel?? He said well no its not…..so I said can I be referred to a specialist, he actually then said what sort of specialist?!

Eventually he agreed to arrange another dr to call tomorrow (who was more empathetic when my antibodies were sky high in November. Honestly feel like I am going insane

What’s range on folate ..it’s either deficient or too low

Recommend you start daily vitamin B complex

good quality daily vitamin B complex, one with folate in (not folic acid)

This can help keep all B vitamins in balance and will help improve B12 levels too

Difference between folate and folic acid

healthline.com/nutrition/fo...

Many Hashimoto’s patients have MTHFR gene variation and can have trouble processing folic acid.

thyroidpharmacist.com/artic...

B vitamins best taken after breakfast

Thorne Basic B recommended vitamin B complex that contains folate, but they are large capsules. (You can tip powder out if can’t swallow capsule)

Thorne currently difficult to find at reasonable price, should be around £20-£25. iherb.com often have in stock. Or try ebay

Igennus B complex popular option too. Nice small tablets. Most people only find they need one per day. But a few people find it’s not high enough dose

Post discussing different B complex

healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

IMPORTANT......If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 7 days before ALL BLOOD TESTS , as biotin can falsely affect test results

endo.confex.com/endo/2016en...

endocrinenews.endocrine.org...

In week before blood test, when you stop vitamin B complex, you might want to consider taking a separate folate supplement (eg Jarrow methyl folate 400mcg) and continue separate B12

helvella.blogspot.com/p/hel...

Only add one supplement at a time then wait 10-14 days to assess any changes

Then look at adding daily vitamin D

Vitamin D is too low

GP should advise on self supplementing if over 50nmol, but under 75nmol (but they rarely do)

mm.wirral.nhs.uk/document_u...

But with Hashimoto’s, improving to around 80nmol or 100nmol by self supplementing may be better

Once you Improve level, very likely you will need on going maintenance dose to keep it there.

Test twice yearly via NHS private testing service when supplementing

Ferritin is too low

Never supplement iron without doing full iron panel test for anaemia first and retest 3-4 times a year if self supplementing. It’s possible to have low ferritin but high iron

Test early morning, only water to drink between waking and test. Avoid high iron rich dinner night before test

Medichecks iron panel test

medichecks.com/products/iro...

Look at increasing iron rich foods in diet

Eating iron rich foods like liver or liver pate once a week plus other red meat, pumpkin seeds and dark chocolate, plus daily orange juice or other vitamin C rich drink can help improve iron absorption

This is interesting because I have noticed that many patients with Hashimoto’s disease and hypothyroidism, start to feel worse when their ferritin drops below 80 and usually there is hair loss when it drops below 50.

Updated reference ranges for top of ferritin range depending upon age

healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

Thank you for your incredible patience while you have been awaiting the outcome of our ferritin reference range review. We conducted this with Inuvi lab, which has now changed the reference ranges to the following:

Females 18 ≤ age < 40 30 to 180

Females 40 ≤ age < 50 30 to 207

Females 50 ≤ age < 60 30 to 264

Females Age ≥ 60 30 to 332

Males 18 ≤ age < 40 30 to 442

Males Age ≥ 40 30 to 518

The lower limits of 30 are by the NICE threshold of <30 for iron deficiency. Our review of Medichecks data has determined the upper limits. This retrospective study used a large dataset of blood test results from 25,425 healthy participants aged 18 to 97 over seven years. This is the most extensive study on ferritin reference ranges, and we hope to achieve journal publication so that these ranges can be applied more widely.

TSH 1.58

Just testing TSH is utterly useless

Either

Suggest you get started on vitamin supplements and retest FULL thyroid and vitamin levels in another 6-8 weeks

Or

Test TSH, Ft4 and Ft3 privately now

Just TSH, Ft4 and Ft3 test - £32

monitormyhealth.org.uk/thyr...

10% off code here

thyroiduk.org/testing/priva...

If Ft4 is too low (under 60-70% though range) you need next dose increase in levothyroxine up to 125mcg daily or possibly 112.5mcg daily

If Ft4 is high but Ft3 low this is poor conversion….improving vitamin levels likely to improve conversion and reduce symptoms

Recommended that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Ok, I will pay privately. Felt totally gaslighted by the DR this morning, constantly repeating “your results are normal “ but I feel nothing like normal?! It’s like banging your head against a brick wall and you end up questioning yourself

The listing says:

Iron (to convert T3 into T4) and Zinc (for healthy levels of T3, T4 and TSH)

1) T3 does not convert into T4 (T4 converts into T3).

2) The ingredients and nutrient information do not identify any iron compounds.

3) The ingredients and nutrient information do not identify any zinc compounds. (Well, one list does but the other two don't. The nutritional information which might back up the claim doesn't tell you there is any.)

The ingredients claims are utterly unfathomable! Three lists of ingredients. All different. Some subtle differences; some obvious.

INGREDIENTS

Tribulus Terrestris (saponins) | Capsule Shell (HMPC) | Maca Extract (lepidium meyenii) | Muira Puama (Mtychopetalum olacoides bentham | Psyllium Husk Powder (Plantago ovata) | Zinc Citrate | Silicon Dioxide | Pregnelalone | Beta Ecdysterone (Cyanotis Aracnoidea)

NUTRITION INFORMATION PER CAPSULE Ingredients Selenium (as L-Selenomethionine) Vitamin A (as Retinol Acetate) lodine (as Potassium lodide) N-Acetyl Cysteine Vitamin B12 (as Methylcobalamin) Vitamin B6 (as Pyridoxal 5 Phosphate) Vitamin B1 (as Thiamine Mononitrate) Vitamin B5 (as Calcium Pantothenate) Gotu Kola Extract 4:1 (Centella asiatica) Coleus Forskohlii Extract 20% Forskolin (Coleus forskohli)

NUTRITIONAL INFORMATION

INGREDIENTS Coleus Forskohlii Extract, Calcium Pantothenate, Capsule Shell| (HPMC), Thiamine HCL, N-Acetyl Cysteine, Pyridoxal 5 Phosphate, Silicon Dioxide, Gotu Kola Extract, L-Selenomethionine, Retinol Acetate, Methylcobalamin, Potassium lodide.

Iron (to convert T3 into T4)

2) The ingredients and nutrient information do not identify any iron compounds.

Yes I meant to flag both these issues up
