bone density issues with suppressed tsh

Knackeredandcross profile image

hi all

my Dr is concerned at my suppressed tsh and wants me to reduce my meds despite my t3/t4 being healthily in range. She says a suppressed tsh will increase risk of increased heart rhythms and loss of bone density. I believe this is only a risk if you are in thyrotoxicosis, not just a suppressed tsh, but does have anyone have any links to research I can evidence please?

thank you in advance 🙏

In all the links below, note the age of the threads and research papers. You might decide that some of them are too old to be useful. There is probably some duplication as well.

Some links you might find useful on the subject of hypothyroidism and heart health :

If you ever get diagnosed with osteopenia you might find this link of interest, despite being old :

Ask her to refer you for a Dexa scan before she tampers with your dosage. In any case, osteoporosis is both suggestive /the result of hypothyroidism. Evidence before treatment is surely the way to go?

I had a bone scan to check density etc. my TSH is very suppressed.

My TSH has been suppressed since 2011 and have had regular DEXA scans throughout that time that have shown no signs of osteoporosis at all. In fact, the scans have always shown my bones to be in excellent condition-one endo said I had the bones of a 35-year old when I was already past 60 and 15 years post-menopausal!

Ask for a DEXA scan before you allow them to mess around with your dosages, especially if you’re feeling well.

It seems most doctors were taught the "heart and bone" thing when training, and despite evidence showing it is not true, they believe it. Giving them evidence that it is not true does not seem to shake their belief.

What does mess with the heart and bones is low or way over T3. So why dont they test it? It must make sense to someone somewhere, but I cannot fathom it.

I am so annoyed! I wrote to my gp and explained that neither my endocrinologist nor experts at thyroid uk has any issue with my suppressed tsh as I am taking a form of t3, so it’s to be expected. I also informed her that if t4/t3 were in range my dose does not need deducting as risks were not the same as with graces disease or thyrotoxicosis. She has now written in my record that she will leave my thyroid treatment well alone despite NICE guidelines stating this is only ok for cancer patients??? How can she miss the point so badly. I was hoping my letter would instigate further investigation on her behalf and thus increase accurate knowledge for other patients but it’s just been completely ignored and dismissed. I’m fuming! Why bother with the pretends of annually testing my thyroid if you’re not going to learn enough to interpret the results properly. Sorry for venting but nobody else in my family gets how frustrating this is :-(
