Pre-biotics vs post biotics - do we need pre, post or both?

This is a follow up post to the recent one about inulin. I had spent a lot of time involved with post-biotics but never really considered pre-biotics at all to date.

This all changed quite recently when I stumbled across inulin which is described in a recent post so will not repeat all those comments here. I will only say it may well turn out to be the single most impactful supplement I have tried since joining this forum.

I have tried all the H&B bacteria pro-biotic pills ad-nauseam with no benefits, done the apple cider vinegar, done the vegetables like beetroot stored in vinegar and most recently necked a ton of kefir again to no avail. No changes to bowels, digestion, energy or anything you can lay your finger on.

So inulin was a massive surprise and if you look at the list below you will see items like bananas that I had always felt been brilliant for my energy and digestion and now I can see the pattern why. So for me it is only pre-biotics and not post.

My genes very much seem to need this extra "support"

and to make all the strictly lovers smile, I am not alone here (an older article I know)

Prebiotic nourishment is essential because that supports the environment for probiotics to do their work. All members of the allium family (e.g. leeks, onions, garlic) contain inulin together with other potent compounds. I think people often make a mistake with garlic by cooking it too hot and too long whereby it seriously loses efficacy. It's probably best used raw (tzatziki etc.)

I have found a daily gargle with "garlic tea" is an amazing tonic - finely slice a decent clove, cover with cold water, leave for 5 minutes and then gargle. I add 2 drops of Ren Shen ginseng tincture because my throat-buds latch onto that taste rather than the (quite powerful) garlic - you could also use proper honey. After I've had my gargle I add the garlic slivers to my chicken's drinking water and they love it.

F.O.S. (a simple sugar) is another useful Prebiotic - on a few occasion in the past I've had rescue kittens with terrible diarrhoea and the only way for them to recover was via syringes of FOS.

very helpful comments and much appreciated - still find it interesting that pre are still so much more powerful/beneficial than post for me - may be different for others. I am guilty of ovecooking the garlic so point noted on that one!
