spatone iron supplement.

Hi there. I’m new to this blog and very glad to be here. I have Hashimotos for 20+ years and have been treated with Levothyroxine.

My symptoms have worsened over the past 2/3 years and I now have Adrenal Fatigue.

Having researched NDT and all the thyroid related symptoms that me and fellow sufferers face I wanted to give it a go if I was a suitable candidate.

After a private consultation which was brilliant , I am a week into taking NDT…I’m increasing to the desired dose very slowly and so far so good.

it’s early days but I have been advised to take Ferritin and so I now have purchased some Spatone.

However, I am aware that I must NOT take it with the NDT and that it needs to be taken on an empty stomach.

As I’m taking the NDT at 9am and 3pm in divided doses, any ideas regarding when is the best time to take the Spatone?

I’m thinking maybe 5.30pm before my evening meal?

Is this a wide enough gap from taking the NDT?

I have taken it at bedtime but it’s not a great time for me to take it…leaves me a bit queezy…

Thoughts welcome.

many thanks

Grinchy.

Hi,

I think it's the type of iron that is hard to stomach in Spatone, here's a recent chat with links to another where someone has had success with iron patches whilst others use heme iron tablets which are easier on the stomach and better absorbed... 🤗

Hi Grinchy57,

Before supplementing with iron it is essential to know your levels before you start. If you have a helpful GP ask them first to do an iron panel or private blood tests are available with discount codes on Thyroid UK.

Once you have the results of an iron panel post them on the forum and others will guide you.

I'm not sure of the timing (possibly four hours away from NDT?) but you'll need to take the Spatone on an empty stomach. If you're up during the night or early morning you could try then.

I take mine in the early hours. I find it tastes awful. So to help with that I mix it with an orange juice and ginger shot drink which masks the metallic taste. Taking it with vitamin C will also aid absorbency but it will be a slow process raising your levels with Spatone.

Other forum users have had very good success raising their levels with 'Three Arrows' heme iron. So if not a vegetarian it may be worthwhile having a look at that 😊

(It took me that long to type my reply...Eeyore's already provided a link for you to other posts discussing ferritin and the three arrows supplement)

Thanks for your reply. I’ve had full blood works on iron and Ferratin was low so the thyroid specialist suggested Spatone/Ferradix.

I think I’ll take at 6.30pm which will be 4 hours after the NDT.

I’ve been mixing with a little Vit C and it tastes fine.

Trial and error.

Your comments are appreciated.

Please add your iron and ferritin results

any obvious reason for low ferritin

Eg heavy periods, vegetarian or vegan?

Never supplement iron without doing full iron panel test for anaemia first and retest 3-4 times a year if self supplementing.

It’s possible to have low ferritin but high iron

Request GP do full iron panel test if not had one yet

Test early morning, fasting, and stop iron supplements 3-5 days before test

Meanwhile…Look at increasing iron rich foods in diet

Eating iron rich foods like liver or liver pate once a week plus other red meat, pumpkin seeds and dark chocolate, plus daily orange juice or other vitamin C rich drink can help improve iron absorption

thanks for your reply.

I’m vegan/vegetarian. Full blood works done including iron and thyroid specialist suggested upping Ferratin…

Maybe give the patches a try along side?

Presumably are you also testing and supplementing daily B12 and vitamin B complex too

Perhaps give iron Patches a go

Test full iron panel regularly…..at least 3 times a year
