Hi, im quite new to this and still getting my head around everything. My gp did a celiac test which was negative so now I want to get on with cutting things out of my diet that may be causing harm. I understand that wheat and dairy are the main culprits.
can anyone recommend a diet plan/book/podcast that I could follow? I’m so tired and there is so much nonsense online.
im wondering about foodmap/elimatition etc etc

The main thing is to do one thing at a time as it can get horribly complicated and takes a lot of relearning old habits.
probably best to eliminate gluten first and see how you feel without that inside you. You will need to do some reading up of where gluten is hidden which is many places!
The bit about it getting horribly complicated is spot on - over the past 5 years I have tried just about every combination of intermittent fasting /gluten and dairy free / high carb /low carb /paleo and have reached the point of reaching out for professional help.
After a couple of weeks of discussion about all my needs and health issues I received a report today with a detailed meal plan week by week.
Nothing like I have been doing at all - but it is organised by someone with a masters in sports nutrition and he helps professional sports people so good enough credentials for me.
He is not a thyroid specialist per se, but took the time to review independently all the various guides and ideas out there jn building the plan -
Feels like an Audi type approach in its thoroughness which is what I need. I won’t say more until I have done a few weeks and see what the outcomes are. Happy to share if this does all work - going strongly vegan hit my b12 badly and will be very careful not to follow a fad type diet again ….good luck !
Thanks for your reply. GP gas done TSH,T4 and IgA. that's all he would do. I've just ordered a whole host of full thyroid and vitamin tests online. as soon as i've done the same i am cutting out gluten!
highly recommended Izabella Wentz protocol, I have all her books, really helped me. I went all in dairy, gluten, soy, sugar, caffeine, alcohol all went, really helped me along with regular testing and optimising vits. 🌱
I am quite new to autoimmune low thyroid and had cut out gluten a year before finding out. Gluten last several days with brain fog, numbness and fatigue.
It has to be completely gf, it is not something you can have treats on.
a)Ignore all the bickies/breads/wraps /cakes. To be gluten free they add all sorts and my guts are better without. Plus most are nasty and expensive (I learned from here and was better for it)
b) rice and potato replaces bread for me
c) Indian food often clean
d) Chinese food not goodunless home cooked with gf soy sauce and oyster sauce not
e)ALDI label ingredients well but do not have free from section
f) fruit, gf nut bars, good ice cream and dried cranberries raisins and nuts are my sweet treat.
g) care with vinegar, avoid barley and rye.
h) I am not sure about oats yet.
g) I use corn flour and or chickpea flour for pancakes
h) tortilla chips tend to be gf. Finding lower salt ones is hard. Sainsbury blue packet ones.
h) quicj food for travel is tough for work . Rice microwave pouches, nuts and raisins. Gf bars peanut etc. Tinned mackerel fillets. Carefully selected bombay mix with lentil flours. Salads
i) grated cheese can have flour in when out. Be carefully with jacket spuds.
J) It has to be a gf frier with oil not used for wheat flour stuff.
Do you have thyroid issues. There is s big link between thyroid and gluten intolerance. Inbtjis subset, I think gluten breaks down into something that closely resembles your thyroid glands and your immune system attacks this and raises more antibodies.
Yes, gf sorts fog and fatigue mostly for me. I am gluten intolerant and autoimmune underactive thyroid. I tried gluten a few times to check this year, now I have my thyroid under control. Gluten reduces my capacity , it takes away my evenings and weekends.
still awaiting full thyroid tests but I have had a low T4 reading so I’m hypo of some sort and have every symptom going. I’ve been in bed all weekend. I just want to feel like myself again
Excellent advice. I am allergic to wheat and barley and decided to go gluten free nearly two years ago. All you have listed I have found out over those two years. Gluten free breads and crackers give me terrible indigestion and inflamed intestines!
Do I feel better? Yes, 150%. Do I feel dreadful if I accidentally ingest gluten and/or wheat? Yes. Categorically, yes.
Eating out we rarely do anymore - I have more money to spend on organic food at home.
Highly recommend Dr. Alan Christianson’s Thyroid Reset Diet. I have tried it myself (without using his brand of supplements) and found fantastic results! And yes, he does recommend no dairy, (but not for the reasons you might think). He also recommends excluding coffee (for 30 days), all things from the sea, most things that are red (as in beets, kidney beans, etc). He is a natural medicine endocrinologist and had Hashimotos himself (has long since healed), and has been successful in helping others since the 70’s. The Thyroid Reset Diet book is a New York Times best seller (for a reason! It works). I too have achieved great strides towards thyroid / digestive health by following this simple, gut sensitive plan. (3.5 years free of pharmaceutical thyroid replacement hormone) He has done the research and explains why this diet works - in easy to understand language.
But if you prefer to read the research on your own, this article was published in 2020 and sounds a whole lot like what Dr Christianson says. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...
While this article doesn’t include mention of iodine (Dr Christianson has a lot to say about a balanced intake of iodine), nor does this article mention autoimmune thyroiditis / Hashimotos - it does have a lot to say about diet and gut dysbiosis and the endocrine system - how it contributes to auto-immune diseases.
The paper ends with a statement to the effect: auto-immune diseases can be healed.
dtate2016, Noticeable by its very absence in the article you link to, is Autoimmune Thyroid Disease!
(Leaky Gut and Autoimmunity: An Intricate Balance in Individuals Health and the Diseased Statencbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...
Perhaps for anyone who tests positive for thyroid antibodies long before the destruction of the thyroid gland properly sets in, there just may be a chance of stopping it in its tracks. But by far the majority of people never know they have thyroid antibodies until their hormone levels go wildly off balance. By which time, it's far too late for any resurrection of the dead or dying thyroid gland, and the only way is medical intervention to deal with the thyroid hormone imbalances.
Red Apple, are there apologies in order here? I think, please check again / notice, that “absence” was mentioned. (I have been thoroughly chastised often enough to include disclaimers - what is the saying again? Schooled at the end of a…..?)
What I can’t quite countenance is the total and utter prevalence of vehemence to the idea that auto immune diseases have remedies, and that there is a plethora of research from all parts of the globe, increasing every day, that there is a root cause, solidly based in scientific research as to the causality of auto-immune diseases. From whither does thou bode? Not to wax poetic.
.If one is not curious nor open to such research, exploring natural foods / diets in pursuit of better health (as I believe the question was raised by Laundry), then so be it. Take the pharmaceutical route - as was pointed out to your beleaguered colleague quite recently, replacement thyroid hormones (read pharmaceuticals) have been providing “adequate care” for a very long time.
