April 2023 NHS Drug Tariff Prices - Liothyronine

The April 2023 NHS Drug Tariff has been published:

The only change for liothyronine appears to be 20 microgram tablets which have dropped very slightly from £51.54 to £50.16 for 28.

I think I'm not getting it - they are much cheaper than they were!

All prices are from NHS sources.

Yes - desiccated thyroid prices do appear to have risen substantially but afraid I don't keep my eye on that.

I source mine from USA and yes their prices are crazy but I don’t convert well plus I have allergic reaction on NHS and don’t do well on just t3

Good to see the price of something coming down! So much for the manufacturers’ excuses of development and production being such an expensive process, eh?

Is there any evidence to show whether it’s being used more widely now that the price has come down or is the medical establishment still coming up with vacuous excuses not to?

Have a look at the excellent Open Prescribing:

Useful, but I’m in Wales… Saying that, I’ve never had a problem with my GPs surgery providing my T3, even through the very expensive days.

I asked the people behind Open Prescribing if they were going to cover the other three nations. They'd like to but the equivalent data isn't readily available so they can't.

Petition the Welsh government to make it available? (This is meant generally - not politically.)

Also important to realise that Roma 20mcg capsules are now dearer than 20mcg tablets.

Some ICBs' T3 policies say patients should be given the capsules, not tablets. Not a sensible idea to have this in a policy document as prices change all the time. And currently the tablets cost less than capsules.

Endorsed!

You might have hoped anyone in that position (ICB policy writing) would understand.

It's not exactly difficult to say something like "Check prices before prescribing."
