ERFA Thyroid

New to taking low dose of above as a trial for my thyroid and health.

I have experienced consistent pain in heart area for few days after starting above, been taking ERFA now for 3 weeks.

Question NOT about dosage. Question is; is it fairly common to have heart problems when taking this medication? If so, why, what causes the heart problems?

I already have some atherosclerosis prior to taking ERFA.

Welcome to the forum 6joy,

is it fairly common to have heart problems when taking this medication?

Absolutely not. Thyroid medication should not be affecting your heart in that way. If you're having pain in that area, then something isn't right and you should certainly consult your doctor about it.

'Question NOT about dosage. '

Despite what you wrote, being on the wrong dose of thyroid medication might be causing your pain. If you want to post your latest thyroid test results and tell us about your Erfa dose, members may be able to offer more support.

I don’t think you can guess that it’s a heart problem?

Could be many things—from indigestion to pancreatitis to costochondritis.

Thing is, don’t guess. 🙏 Get to a doctor ASAP, describe the pain, get it properly diagnosed.

Just for clarity, I obviously saw the dr, and was sent to A&E.

I am also a practitioner, not practising at present, so I ruled out other possibilities, as did doctors.

All I am/ was asking was have people suffered with heart related symptoms while on thyroid medication...

Keeping it simple, my question, 'Question NOT about dosage. Question is; is it fairly common to have heart problems when taking this medication? If so, why, what causes the heart problems?'

Thanking you in advance for your support with this query.

Thyroid hormones control the activity of most cells in the body, including the heart.. so if hypothyroidism is an issue ( not enough thyroid hormone).. then that will cause problems with the heart .... and replacing the thyroid hormone with the right amount needed will improve the heart function.

If too much thyroid hormone is replaced. or replacement taken when not needed , or the wrong balance of T4:T3 was taken for that individual .. then any of those could easily cause problems with the heart .

So your simple question dose not really have a simple answer .

people who need to take thyroid hormones , whether Levothyroxine or NDT ,do commonly have heart problems when not on the right dose (or kind) of thyroid hormone replacement for their individual needs.

6joy, 'I am also a practitioner, not practising at present, '

What sort of 'practitioner'?

And what country are you in?

Although this is Thyroid UK, we have members from all over the world. It would be helpful if you added some information to your profile, especially your country of residence.
