T3 sourcing

I have been taking levothyroxine for a number of years but my symptoms are not improving. The depression and anxiety is becoming unbearable, my skin and hair loss is dreadful and the tiredness and brain fog is affecting my work. I've tried going to the GP so many times but they are not listening and say I should be fine as taking levothyroxine. I feel trapped being this person I'm not. I want to get back to being me.

I would be grateful for any recommendations for sourcing T3.

I believe you may need to PM with recommendations but any gratefully received.

Yeah that's how it went for me 😩

Have you requested an Endo referral? How are your latest results looking?

Guessing you have checked your vits and mins levels too?

Having more bloods done tomorrow. Also checking vitamins and minerals too. I already take vitamin D as the was low last time I had my bloods taken.I have requested a referral and I've been told there is no need as they are treating me with T4!!!

Once you are armed with T3/T4 results you can insist... I'm not sure they can refuse you it's up to the Endo? With my surgery I notice you can actually fill in an online referral which would be good as you can fill out all of your symptoms and it will go on your record

Hope test is early morning, ideally just before 9am and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

come back with new post once you get results

Welcome to the group. It helps people to know where you're at if you fill in your profile.

What were your last blood results with ranges?

Have you had key vitamins tested lately - ferritin, folate, B12 & D3? If these are not OPTIMAL we cannot use our thyroid hormone properly.

Do you have Hashimoto's?

I'm having more bloods done tomorrow. Vitamins etc are also being tested. I don't know if I have Hashimoto's!

Ask GP to test thyroid antibodies.

welcome to the forum

Please add most recent thyroid and vitamin results

How much levothyroxine are you currently taking

Do you always get same brand at each prescription

Important to know what Ft4 and Ft3 results are before considering adding T3

What vitamin supplements are you taking

Important to fine tune levothyroxine and get all four vitamins tested and at GOOD levels before considering adding T3

Do you know if your hypothyroidism is caused by autoimmune thyroid disease, also called Hashimoto’s, usually diagnosed by high thyroid antibodies

Bloods should be retested 6-8 weeks after each dose change or brand change in levothyroxine

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 tested

Also both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested at least once

Very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 at least once year minimum

About 90% of primary hypothyroidism is autoimmune thyroid disease

Autoimmune thyroid disease with goitre is Hashimoto’s

Autoimmune thyroid disease without goitre is Ord’s thyroiditis.

Both are autoimmune and generally called Hashimoto’s.

Low vitamin levels are extremely common when hypothyroid, especially with autoimmune thyroid disease

20% of autoimmune thyroid patients never have high thyroid antibodies and ultrasound scan of thyroid can get diagnosis

In U.K. medics hardly ever refer to autoimmune thyroid disease as Hashimoto’s (or Ord’s thyroiditis)

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins

please don't bank on the T3 solving those issues because they haven't for me and I have been on T3 for around 5yrs now and my anxiety and depression is much worse lately even though my T3 levels looked much better on my last bloods. Root cause of mine is obviously somewhere else which I haven't discovered yet

I think it's worth a try so at least I know if it's another issue.
