Hi jess1992_, my eyes now look so much better than they did during theactive phase of TED, but no, they are not exactly the same as before my diagnosis. I have one eye that protrudes slightly more than the other. It’s more noticeable in photographs, My eyes are also not perfectly aligned. However, after optimal treatment they are 90 (my ophthalmologist says 95%) better, which I have come to accept. I now wear glasses instead of contact lenses, as frames give me confidence. I still have issues with light sensitivity, so always wear lenses that darken in bright light. In addition, I have green lenses for night time driving, which reduces glare. I also have ongoing dry eye symptoms, but find that daily use of preservative free drops ;HycoSan or Hyloforte) alleviates this. I continue to take a maintenance dose of 100ug selenium, alongside lutein and zeazanthin for general eye health. Bright lipstick is my go-to confidence booster, as I can no longer wear mascara due to eye sensitivity.
I totally understand how you feel. I’ve benefited from talking to others via the TEDct information line and have joined webinars run by the charity. I know many with TED also link with others via TEDct’s facebook group.
As I said in your last post, I’ve found it useful to take ongoing pictures of my eyes before and after treatment. I keep these in ‘hidden’ on my phone. They are useful for sharing with my endo/ ophthalmologist but also to me, as a reminder how much better I look now than during the active phase.
Please believe that you will feel better with optimal treatment. Keep reaching out to others via this forum and TEDct.
What are the next steps of your TED treatment plan?
Hey there again ;
Have you been able to find your initial first blood test result and happy to share these results and ranges with forum members ?
Have you now the medical proof of which antibodies were found over range and positive and which confirm the diagnosis ?
Your eyes may take some time to recover it all depends what treatment options have been suggested to you
Since your eyes are involved I trust the eye specialist and the endocrinologist are liaising with each other as to most suitable treatment option for you and hope the AT drug has relieved any symptoms you were suffering.
I found the face disfiguration deeply upsetting - but it does get better - but it does take time.
My daughter had full blown Graves at the age of 12..goiter, rapid heart beat, and protruding eyes. She had radioactive iodine to destroy her thyroid. Her eyes subsided and returned to normal size.
