Magnesium and the bladder

I know this is a thyroid board and we do need to keep on topic - but if it encourages any hypo doubters for magnesium supplements to give it a go then for blokes here magnesium can have remarkable benefits in helping the bladder muscles and enabling uninterrupted night time sleep.

There is genuine research behind this and so is a no brainier really - but this line of thinking does not appear to be widely accepted - for some reason when I mention to male friends I meet with quite some suspicion…and some tell me it does not work for them (so accept perhaps this is very specific for individuals )

I am not sure why though so will mention all this is in a whisper :)

And I will answer with roar!

Bladder problems are a symptom of hypothyroidism as in this Paper...

I have (possibly) a lifetime of thyroid issues but initially diagnosed over 20 years ago and more recently discovered to be a form of Thyroid Hormone Resistance...self medicated with high dose T3-only.

I also have had urinary problems for around 20 years...currently treated with long term prophylactic antibiotics for Chronic UTI

I continually look for other possible things that might improve my situation because medics have not been able to satisfactorily treat those conditions... with their varying, and similar, symptoms

I guess like much in hypo land it might be a case of trial and error so I'm off to order magnesium glycinate....with fingers crossed!

Hope it works for you....thank you!

Trust me I have tried all the various versions of magnesium including oil you rub on (disaster tbh) and glycinate is pricey but the only one that hit the spot for me …

Nothing wrong with admitting we take (appropriate) supplements is here...it's not a weakness!!

Thank you for posting.

Hypothyroidism can lead to low intracellular magnesium levels, there are no tests available for this. It does make sense to trial a magnesium supplement and even take a little occasionally to keep levels up. Magnesium plays a major role in smooth muscle contraction opposing the contracting effects of calcium. This applies to many organs including the gut and vascular system (and I assume the bladder to some extent).

The best way to check for magnesium deficiency is to trial a supplement. I use magnesium citrate but I believe glyconate is good too.
