can anyone advise on what would be considered optimal levels for the above?

ferritin 29 (13-150)

folate 1.94 (>3.89)

b12 91.9 (37.5-150)

Vit D 85 (50-200)

Thanks. Asking for a friend.

Does your friend have a thyroid condition? When we discuss optimal levels here it's generally for those who are hypothyroid and need optimal levels for thyroid hormone to work and good conversion to take place.

This looks like a Medichecks test?

ferritin 29 (13-150)

Regardless of whether your friend has a thyroid condition, NICE consider this to be iron deficiency - see

cks.nice.org.uk/topics/anae...

In all people, a serum ferritin level of less than 30 micrograms/L confirms the diagnosis of iron deficiency.

Your friend should ask GP to do a full iron panel (serum iron, saturation percentage, total iron binding capacity plus ferritin) to see if it's iron deficiency. Also a full blood count to see if there is anaemia. Quote the NICE statement if necessary to support request for testing.

folate 1.94 (>3.89)

If Medichecks the range is 3.89-19.45 and the unit of measurement is mcg/L (ug/L) and we advise members that the optimal level is at least half way through range.

A level of 1.94 is classed as folate deficiency according to NICE:

cks.nice.org.uk/anaemia-b12...

Folate level

◦Serum folate of less than 7 nanomol/L (3 micrograms/L) is used as a guide to indicate folate deficiency.

Your friend needs to discuss this with their GP and GP should initiate treatment for folate deficiency, this is usually a course of folic acid for a few months.

b12 91.9 (37.5-150)

This is a pretty good result. Below 70 it's suggested testing for B12 deficiency and we generally suggest over 100 so this result doesn't really raise any concern.

Vit D 85 (50-200)

This isn't too bad but could be better.

The Vit D Council, Vit D Society and Grassroots Health all recommend a level of 100-150nmol/L with a recent blog post of Grassroots Health recommending at least 125nmol/L. So although this result isn't too bad it could be better.

You might want to check out a recent post that I wrote about Vit D and supplementing:

healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

and you can check out the link to how to work out the dose needed to increase the current level to the recommended level.

Current level of 85nmol/L = 34ng/ml

If you need further help with this please ask.

Hi and thanks for your very helpful response. Yes these were medichecks tests and she has a thyroid condition for which she takes levothyroxine. I’ll pass on the information and advice. X
