lifespan - why we age and why we don’t have to David Sinclair

Having read literally 00s of healthy living/healthy diet books over the past 4 decades, I am half way through this book and it has introduced me to some new understand about how our bodies work that will motivate me to keep strong in my approach to dealing with auto immune health.

Won’t be for everyone , but the author is someone I will now follow more closely :)

It’s certainly interesting. Lots of fasting, 2 to 3 meals a day, very little red meat and a diet of mainly vegetables.

Some folk would say they’d rather eat what they want and *not* have a long life… :)

I know people have had amazing results by changing their diets—that said, I think I may have ruined my thyroid function and metabolism more generally by going on repeated low calorie diets from puberty onwards because of being told I was chubby.

Also think there might be a gender difference when it comes to fasting (which I seem to remember is backed up by science). Females don’t tend to fare so well.

I have tried the intermittent fasting but felt the fall in core body temperature simply too troublesome and perhaps arguably dangerous so it may not be an option for those of us with thyroid issues.

The argument about making the body run a bit colder to stress the body to encourage better adaption and longevity due to the way the genes express themselves is not a great message I suspect.

However, there are some hugely positive messages about the roles for certain supplements, good diet, mediation and exercise which we probably all know we should do - but the weight of science here gives us the strongest possible reasons for being as healthy as we possibly can.

And I do get your point about all of us having lots of free choice

so the big question for me is what diet and supplements does a world guru on inflammation and disease actually follow himself.

Well is it all written down at the end of the book - so best not to provide a full cut and paste for those who want the fun of reading the book from cover to cover.

BUT....

He agrees pretty much entirely with most of the advice here to cut right back on bread, sugar and starches and live mainly vegetarian diet with a little animal protein.

Plenty of walking and weights work.

Keen on some of the more important vitamins recommended here so again all good (eg D) - but not a couple that really matter to me heh ho.

Where it gets rather more interesting as all the “other” stuff (including supplements) he thinks is critical for long term health just about none of which I have seen mentioned here.

That means to me that as a wider community, we are being very sensible and sticking with proven options or missing out some vital “truths” which are at the margins as they are in the PhD research rooms and not in the public domain.

Do I go with him and place my trust or not...

And trust me I feel I have been looking down just about every rabbit hole for the past 5 years with an awful lot of dead ends to show for it eg black seed oil pills ... so I am a little more suspicious now when someone says this is the one thing that is going to make all the difference :)
