Progesterone

Hello!

I am attempting to get all my ducks in a row to improve thyroid medication tolerance šŸ¦†

Does anyone have any insight about progesterone? My blood levels are extremely low (6), I have PCOS and Iā€™m profoundly hypo atm (TSH 10) as I canā€™t tolerate thyroid hormone, so I think it would be a good idea but Iā€™m not sure where to start.

Many thanks :)

hello, Iā€™m hypothyroid but have been helping someone who has PCOS but not hypothyroid.

Sheā€™s really struggled to get the right support despite seeing multiple Endos and Gynaes privately who have all been pretty useless.

Itā€™s quite hard to get progesterone orally as most of the PCOS ā€œexpertsā€ recommend getting the coil for progesterone instead. Very few doctors seem prepared to prescribe progesterone (even the private ones) and the ones that do seem to have very long waitlists for an appointment.

Anyway thereā€™s a wealth of knowledge on these forums with many excellent members who share advice. I hope you get some good responses to your queries.

I used this progesterone cream for years, pre and post menopause. I saw Dr P (a wonderful private doctor) and he recommended it.

did you mean you saw Dr Peat who created the product or Dr P-field?

Wired123 I meant Dr Peatfield.

Hi, thanks for your replyĀ did he recommend this to you when you were post menopausal? I am still menstruating age.

Hidden I was pre menopause when I saw him. He talked about oestrogen dominance.

Have you investigated ways to balance your blood glucose say thorough dietary/lifestyle interventions to promote natural ovulation and hence progesterone? Myoinositol is helpful for some.

in reply to Serendipitious

hi thanks for your reply :) yes I take ovasitol every morning and every evening which is supposedly the perfect ratio of myo and d chiro inositol!

I did the keto diet for 14 months, it made me much more insulin resistant in the end, and my adrenals totally tanked which took my thyroid with it. I am still recovering the effects 2 years later! So now I just eat a balanced, processed free diet!

keto diet is extreme for a lot of people and especially ladies. Overstimulating the adrenals can cause more damage. Iā€™m just talking about relatively easier methods. Have you heard of Glucose Goddess or Jessica Inchauspe?

Changing the order in which you consume certain foods, perhaps reducing refined carbohydrates and focusing on lots of vegetables.

in reply to Serendipitious

hi thanks for your reply :) yes I have done alllll the nutrition research in the world. I am pro metabolic officially but tbh, keto messed me up mentally and I am now quite prone to ED so I just eat sensibly and leave it at that x

Thatā€™s good to hear. Iā€™ve been studying FM and nutrition since 2016 I still feel I could learn more but I feel a lot of people havenā€™t heard of this technique which is supported by considerable scientific research: instagram.com/p/CgXCwmFIjYn...

Itā€™s upto you but it will make a huge difference in preventing glucose spikes without even changing your diet. Not sure what you mean by ED. All the best.

in reply to Serendipitious

hi thanks! Iā€™ll take a look :) I am actually pretty good at preventing glucose spikes now, I always pair carbs with protein and my carb sources are generally roots, some unrefined grains and fruit. The crashes have actually really resolved themselves! But I am on adrenal cortex now so that probably helps.

hi. I donā€™t know about the nutrition side but I do know that I have just started taking Utrogestan. I have NO uterus and started Estrogel about 6 years ago. 2 years later I started having hypo symptoms which eventually led to me starting Levo about 18 months ago. Iā€™m on 125 mcgs now but still have residual symptoms. I only recently read that estrogen dominance ( low progesterone) can trigger hypothyroidism so my GP agreed to trial progesterone. It may take a while but Iā€™m hopeful šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

in reply to SarahJane1471

hi thanks for your reply :) can I ask your starting dose?

SarahJane1471 profile image
SarahJane1471 in reply to

100mgs every night. Iā€™m 57. Itā€™s the micronised progesterone. I believe it can be used vaginally.

Try looking at Dr Louise Newson website. Sheā€™s the menopause guru at the moment.

I did a thread about progesterone but I donā€™t know how to add links (šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļø)

in reply to SarahJane1471

oh wow, the stuff I bought is 4mg daily so I guess supplement versions are just minuscule compared to what you get from doctor. Iā€™ll look her up! I am not menopausal, just pcos šŸ˜ž

Definitely worth checking her website balance-menopause.com - there is so much information on there.

I was prescribed Utrogestan by the Newson Health Clinic and yes, I was told you can take it vaginally and it's effect is stronger so you only need to take it alternate days. I don't know how this would affect PCOS though. I take it orally because that way it also helps with sleep.

Iherb have a lot of natural progesterone creams for sale. I use a Now one which is popular and has dosing advice on the bottle. Facebook forum called Sexy Hormones is popular. Also a book called ā€œWhat your doctor doesnā€™t tell you about peri-menopauseā€ by Dr Lee (not entirely sure off top of my head the title/author but youā€™ll find it) is very helpful. His view is that sometimes oestrogen/progesterone imbalance can cause hypo symptoms. Hope thatā€™s helpful! I use one pump of the Now cream at night on days 14-28 (basically after ovulation and before cycle due to start). Lots of info in the book though. Reviews are helpful on iherb too! Good luck!

in reply to RachelP03

oh thanks! So helpful šŸ˜Š do you think I should be concerned that exogenous progesterone might suppress what little I make?

RachelP03 profile image
RachelP03 in reply to

Iā€™m not versed that well in the science behind it all but I do know that for whatever reason (maybe hypothyroidism?) we may be out of whack and I think itā€™s worthwhile trying to rebalance if youā€™re not producing enough. If you read the book, he talks about replenishment of your stores and then you may be able to wean off after a few months which does make sense I guess! Sorry I canā€™t help any more though!

in reply to RachelP03

No, thatā€™s super helpful! Thank you so much. I think that will make sense, what I have read is that thyroid hormone in the blood is made more ā€œsensitiveā€ and therefore is better usable by progesterone, but I know that that is very unscientific and ideally need to do more research. I guess overall I can just say that there does seem to be some kind of synergistic relationship between thyroid hormone and progesterone.

Yes I have read and heard the same but there is way too much conflicting information out there! I went with the natural cream as it seems a lot kinder and more natural than taking other forms. Guess itā€™s a lot of trial and error! Shame the medics of the world havenā€™t yet quite worked it out but Iā€™m sure there will be a machine that will tell us exactly whatā€™s out of balance and how to fix it at some point in the very far future!!

in reply to RachelP03

and how to fix it! That would be the multi trillion dollar question! šŸ˜®ā€šŸ’ØšŸ˜®ā€šŸ’ØšŸ˜…

I take 200 mg a night, was on 100 But dr just upped it. I get a compounded natural oral pill from my endo who is huge on female hormones and balancing them. Heā€™s said Iā€™m very estrogen dominant and peri menopause is just making it worse. I too have hashimotoā€™s as well. I also have PMDD. The progesterone helps a bit with that and severe cramps, it doesnā€™t get rid of it, but without it Iā€™d be way worse. Also keeps the cycle regular. So, maybe look for an outside the box dr who prescribes compounded progesterone. Or ask gp to prescribe it.

thanks so much! X

I don't know where progesterone stands in thyroid treatment (My TSH is suppressed) but it was great as a menopause treatment - for me.

Hello, my Gynae was useless with my PCOS, but i convinced him to give me the Progesterone Pill(as i knew it would help with Fibromyalgia pain & migraine too)... its not a natural Progesterone and a high dose of Progesterone, it helped alot... even taking half a tablet to start. I then went to a HRT specialist and she gave me Ultrogestan 100mg(natural)..i take it internally as it drugs me up if i take it orally.

in reply to therese3009

thanks so much for that feedback!
